We know how exhausting sciatica can be. That sharp, shooting pain down the leg can make even a short walk around the garden feel like a mountain to climb.

If you're struggling this week, here are three "neighbourly" tips to help take the edge off:

Keep moving (gently): It’s a common myth that you should stay in bed. Actually, short, gentle walks on flat ground—like a stroll in Horsforth—often help keep the nerve from getting more irritated.

Check your "sitting" habits: Avoid those deep, soft sofas or "bucket" style car seats for a few days. Try a firm chair that keeps your hips slightly higher than your knees.

The "Heat vs. Ice" rule: If your back feels tight and "guarded," a warm pack can help the muscles relax. If the leg pain is very sharp, a cold pack on the lower back for 10 minutes can sometimes soothe the inflammation.

If you’ve been at your screen since 9:00 AM, you might notice your shoulders creeping up towards your ears. It’s a very common habit, especially when we’re focused.

You don’t need an hour at the gym to feel a bit of relief. Try these three movements right where you’re sitting:

The Chin Tuck: Gently draw your chin back (like you’re making a double chin). It helps reset the heavy weight of your head over your shoulders.

The Shoulder Squeeze: Imagine there’s a pencil between your shoulder blades and try to pinch it. Hold for five seconds, then let go.

The Big Breath: Deep breath in, and as you exhale, let your shoulders drop as far away from your ears as possible.

It only takes a minute, but your body will certainly thank you for it this afternoon.

Whether you’re training for the Leeds Half Marathon or just enjoying a brisk Sunday loop around Roundhay Park or The Chevin, looking after your heart is one of the best things you can do.

But as any runner knows, your heart might be ready to go while your hamstrings are still hitting the "snooze" button. A cold February morning can make muscles feel a bit stiffer than usual. To help you stay comfortable on the paths, here is a simple two-minute warm-up to try before you set off:

- Leg swings: Hold onto a gate or tree and swing each leg 10 times.
- High knees: March on the spot for 30 seconds to wake up your hips.
- Glute squeezes: Wake up those "power muscles" before you hit the hills.

Moving shouldn't feel like a chore. If a recurring ni**le is stopping you from getting out there, we’re always here to help you find your stride again.
