Rob Burrow Marathon 2025 ✅
3 hours 31 mins

Surprisingly, I really enjoyed this. First marathon, hotter than the sun, and still managed to cross the line with a time I’m genuinely pleased with.

I’m far from a natural runner, and if you’d told me a year ago I’d be running a road marathon in a half-decent time, I wouldn’t have believed you. Just goes to show what you can do when you put your mind to it.

Training in the final stretch didn’t exactly go to plan…a dodgy knee and a couple of illnesses meant the last month was a bit of a shambles. Wasn’t convinced sub 4 hours was on the cards, but I made a plan and actually managed to stick to it.

Massive shoutout to Steph, who smashed her half marathon in 1:57—less than 18 months postpartum. Insanely impressive.

And a big well done to PT client Gina, who knocked a massive 7 minutes off her marathon PB. Flying!

Thanks again for all the sponsors - we’ve managed to raise way more than anticipated…the Just Giving page is still live if you wanted to donate some money to some great causes (link in my bio).

All in all—great success. Already looking forward to the next one.

The gym can be an intimidating place, especially if you have no idea what you’re doing. Expecting to turn up and intuitively know what to do is a recipe for a wasted gym membership.

Find a PT you trust, learn a bit, and get a plan.

Exercise to become robust.

Robust so you’re not worried about pulling your back when you put your socks on.

Robust so you’re not stressing about your next blood pressure reading.

Robust so your diet isn’t on a knife edge and you’re stressing about what to eat at the restaurant at the weekend.

Robust so you can go for a run or a cycle at the weekend.

Robust so you can run around like an idiot with your kids and your grandkids.

Robust so you’re ready to tackle whatever tomorrow brings.

Our current ‘food environment’ is one of the leading causes of the nation’s obesity problem.

We are faced with too much choice, too often in our day.

A straightforward fix, is to stop varying things so much. Everyday does NOT have to be different.

Why not eat the same breakfast, lunch and snacks everyday and have your evening meal on rotation?

You’ll reduce the decisions you have to make by 75% and massively reduce the amount of time and effort that goes into your food prep.

If you’re thinking to yourself “that sounds boring”...what’s more boring:
a) a bit of repetition in your diet
b) being constantly frustrated with your lack of progress

There are certain things in this world that we absolutely know beyond all reasonable doubt….the earth is round, beef with a Sunday roast is overrated and…we need a calorie deficit to lose weight.

If weight loss is your goal, don’t lose sight of the basics.

Regular exercise is the answer & if you’re not exercising regularly, you’re doing yourself a disservice.

But don’t panic, don’t stress, don’t feel bad. It’s not too late.

Get out there, find something you enjoy and get after it.

If you’re not progressing, you’re probably looking for reasons in the wrong places.

You’re probably getting frustrated with your slow results, saying ‘f**kit’ and then trying a new shiny diet.

Stop. It.

Stop holding yourself to unrealistic expectations.

Stop comparing your progress to others.

Choose a good trainer/programme/coach & stick with it.

Be patient. Keep going.

Let me start by saying that I have no idea who these people are and I'm not commenting on this situation specifically.

That being said, this type of intimate touching and physical contact is NOT THE NORM for a personal trainer. I see so many touchy touchy videos of trainers with clients and I always think how many people will be put off using a personal trainer because they assume this type of stuff happens.

Context is important, and different people may have different techniques, but in my opinion, touching/stroking/prodding in a personal training session is rarely necessary.

So please don't be put off the idea of training with a PT because you think you're going to have someone wearing jorts and feeling you up.

We shouldn’t be demonising all processed food.

If a few chicken dippers and the odd pack of crisps makes your life easier (and your food bill cheaper), you shouldn’t feel bad about it.

Eating EXCLUSIVELY processed food isn’t ideal; but it CAN be part of a ‘healthy’ diet.

I’m not usually a fan of faux-philosophical quotes on social media, but this one hits the spot. As I/we/you get older, it gets more important every day to take our health by the horns…

Don’t wait until you feel too fat to chase around with your kids

Don’t wait until the doctor tells you you’re pre-diabetic

Don’t wait until you have heart palpitations going up the stairs

Don’t wait until you’re told you need to start on blood pressure medication.

Get going now…time is ticking.
