From 1 July 2025, routine cervical screening intervals will be extended from 3 to 5 years for participants aged 25-49 who test negative after attending cervical screening on or after this date.

The NHS Cervical Screening Programme saves thousands of lives every year by checking for high-risk Human Papilloma Virus (hrHPV) which causes almost all cervical cancers. In England, women and people with a cervix are currently invited every 3 years between the ages of 25-49 and every 5 years if aged 50-64 years.

Next test due dates will not be changed; individuals will be invited at the interval in which they were advised of at the time of their last test.

This change will be clearly communicated to the public through media, social media and the NHS.uk and gov.uk websites.

Tirzepatide, commonly known as Mounjaro®, is being introduced in a small number of GP practices as part of wider support for people living with obesity. It is only available to a limited number of patients in the first year, based on strict NHS criteria.

Eligibility includes a BMI of 40 or more and at least four serious weight-related health conditions. Patients must also take part in a structured support programme (wraparound care) including healthy eating and physical activity. There is no need to contact your GP practice - eligible patients will be contacted directly by their practice or the NHS.

This phased rollout follows updated guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and is part of a national staged programme aimed at improving health outcomes for people living with obesity and related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

In the first year, Mounjaro® is only available to patients who have:

A BMI of 40 or more (adjusted for ethnicity)
At least four of the following health conditions (each of which has its own qualifying level of severity) - type 2 diabetes - high blood pressure - heart disease - obstructive sleep apnoea - abnormal blood fats (dyslipidemias)
Or where urgent weight loss is needed for critical surgery or treatment
If you're from a South Asian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean background, the BMI threshold is slightly lower - 37.5 instead of 40.

We understand that it may feel frustrating or disappointing if you're not eligible for Mounjaro® at this time - even if you’ve been hoping for this kind of support. Not everyone will be eligible for medication right now. But this is not a reflection of your effort, your worth, or your need.

New guidelines have been introduced for Mounjaro injections, to help people lose weight and will be available at GP surgeries in England from today - but only for those patients who are eligible.

To qualify, patients need to meet the following criteria: a BMI of 40 or over (or 37.5 if from a minority ethnic background) plus 4 out of 5 of the following conditions: type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart and vascular disease, high cholesterol, and obstructive sleep apnoea.

If you meet these criteria, please send an e-consultation to the surgery, and we will get back to you.
