Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance, an annual event that honours the memory of transgender people whose lives have been lost as a result of transphobia.

This evening we have illuminated Jubilee Wing at Leeds General Infirmary to pay tribute and show solidarity with our transgender community, colleagues, patients and families.

Dr Micheal Taylor recognised at Little Moments Matter awards!

Dr Micheal Taylor - Consultant Paediatric Neurologist - has been named winner of the Empowering Families Award in the Little Moments Matter Awards held by charity Dravet Syndrome UK.

Dr Taylor was also 'highly commended' in the Healthcare Professional of the Year (Clinician) award category. Congratulations Dr Taylor!

The Little Moments Matter Awards celebrate professionals who have made a profound difference to the lives of families affected by a rare condition known as Dravet Syndrome.

Dravet Syndrome is a severe form of epilepsy that includes frequent seizures, intellectual disability and a range of co-occurring difficulties including issues with speech, language, mobility, behaviour, eating and sleep. Children and adults with Dravet Syndrome require 24/7 care. The condition can have a huge impact on quality of life for the individual and the whole family.

Dr Taylor was nominated by Laura Bentham and Louise Craddy for going above and beyond in providing care for their young children living with Dravet Syndrome.

Louise whose daughter Willow-Rose aged five years old lives with Dravet Syndrome said:

'He always asks parents opinions, very caring and understanding. His knowledge about Dravet is amazing. He has been looking after my little one from three months old and even the first time we met him we knew he was something special. Whenever my little one is in hospital and he hears she is in he will come down and help out and check up on her and make sure she has everything she needs. One of the most lovely, happiest and nicest doctors I have ever met. Makes living with Dravet Syndrome that bit easier.'

On receiving his award Dr Taylor said:

'It’s such an honour to receive these awards, working with families living with Dravet Syndrome with my wonderful colleagues at Leeds Teaching Hospitals is a privilege and I’m inspired everyday by their strength and resilience.'

Congratulations to Dr Taylor and thank you to the families who nominated him for these fantastic awards!

While resident doctors are taking industrial action we are asking patients to choose services appropriately and take simple steps to help ensure care is available to patients who need it most. This includes using 111 online as the first port of call for health needs, and only using 999 if it is a serious or life-threatening emergency. Thank you.

Patients who haven’t been contacted or informed that their planned appointment has been postponed should attend as normal.

Today is World Prematurity Day and the our Neonatal Team marked the day with an all-day event in Clarendon Wing Reception for families.

Former neonatal patients and their families were invited back to celebrate their journeys and help the team to raise funds to support patients and families currently spending time on the unit.

Former neonatal twins Penelope and Rosa attended with their mum (Anna) and dad (Ryan). Penelope and Rosa were born prematurely at 32 weeks and cared for on our neonatal units at St James’ University Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary.

Penelope and Rosa developed with Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) – a rare condition in identical twins where babies develop with a shared placenta resulting in an imbalanced blood flow from one twin (known as the donor) to the other (recipient), leaving one baby with a greater blood volume than the other.

Now two years old, Penelope and Rosa and doing really well and the Neonatal Team were to delighted to reconnect with them. Anna shared this message with other families on a neonatal journey:

‘There will be ups and downs. The journey will be tough but it will be one you look back on with gratitude’

Sarah McKennell (Family Integrated Care Nurse) lead on the organisation of the event and reflected:

‘It’s been so nice to reconnect with the families who we get to know so well as they move through the neonatal unit. Our neonatal patients and their families go on a journey, and we try to support them at every stage. These events are important because it allows families to connect with others who understand the journey they’ve been on and it gives everyone time to celebrate just how far these babies have come!’

Mr Whippy Leeds called in today to give out free ice creams for patients and staff at Leeds Children's Hospital, part of BBC Children in Need.

Mr Whippy Leeds was popular as ever! Patients and staff were able to visit the ice cream van and those who couldn't leave the wards placed orders that were delivered to the wards by hospital staff.

Play Leader Lucy delivered ice creams and lollies to the Children's Assessment and Treatment (CAT) Unit. Lucy said:

'Little treats like this really make the patients' day. It's so kind and it has cheered everyone up on a very grey November afternoon. Thank you!'

Huge thanks to Mr Whippy Leeds for this generous donation!

A quick pit stop at Leeds Children's Hospital!

The Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team brought their F1® car back to Leeds Children’s Hospital yesterday for patients to enjoy.

This visit is part of an incredible partnership with Leeds Hospitals Charity, showing how corporate collaborations can make a real difference for patients and families.

Through Aston Martin Aramco Formula One™ Team’s nationwide community outreach programme, the team is visiting five hospitals across the UK, and thanks to this ongoing relationship, Leeds was lucky enough to welcome them for the second time!

Patients, families and staff were able to visit the car outside the hospital, chat to driver Jak Crawford and take part in a racing suit design competition with a money-can't-buy experience prize!

The team brought some fabulous gifts for patients and Jak even visited the Children's Assessment and Treatment (CAT) Unit to chat to patients and meet some of our amazing team.

Huge thanks to Leeds Hospitals Charity, Jak and everyone at Aston Martin Aramco Formula One™ for a fantastic visit that brought lots of smiles to the hospital.

Earlier in the year Dr Avanish Tantry (Consultant Paediatrician) took part in a podcast series called 'Toxic Legacy: uncovering the threat of lead poisoning'.

Dr Tantry spoke to award winning journalist Laura Hughes at Financial Times about his experience of treating lead poisoning in children here in Leeds.

In the podcast Laura and Dr Tantry discuss an innovative flagging system used across Leeds, designed to give doctors an early warning to the signs of lead poisoning in children and young people. This system was implemented by paediatricians at Leeds Children's Hospital with support form biochemical scientists and colleagues in IT. This was the first system of it's kind in the UK.
