Amy's artwork is helping to normalise diabetes technology for patients in Leeds.

20-year-old Amy from Leeds recently progressed from our Children’s Diabetes Service onto adult services within Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

Amy has been under the care of the children’s team since she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was just six years old! As part of her transition to adult services, Amy has created a beautiful painting which she has donated to the Children’s Diabetes Centre at our St James’ University Hospital site.

Amy was inspired by her experiences as a young person with Diabetes and wanted to create something that would support other children and young people in the service.

Amy said:

‘When I was younger it was really hard to accept diabetes because other people didn’t know what it was. I never saw characters in books and TV who had the physical features that I had. I wanted to normalise some of the technology, how it’s used and raise awareness of the condition’

The picture features fairy-tale characters with diabetes specific technology such as insulin pumps and glucose monitors.

Amy, who now works at Pinderfields Hospital, also wanted thank the children’s team who have looked after her:

‘The support and care on a personal level have made a huge difference to my experience. They have helped me to be confident, they have supported me through school and always ensured that my needs are met wherever I am’

Amy’s picture is now proudly hanging in the waiting room where it can be seen by patients and their families as they attend clinic.

We want to say a huge thank you to Amy for creating this brilliant artwork for our patients and wish her well as she progresses onto adult diabetes services.

Dr Mike is taking on 'Every Day in May for Dravet' (plus a bit extra!) 🏃

Dr Mike Taylor (Consultant Paediatric Neurologist) is taking on the Every Day in May challenge to raise funds for Dravet Syndrome UK.

Mike will run 5km every day in May but just to make it a little bit more interesting he will also run an additional daily 1km with his three-year-old son Henry! Go Henry!

When he's not running, Dr Mike leads our highly specialist Dravet Syndrome Clinic, one of only a handful of clinics in the UK. Dravet Syndrome is a rare, life-long and life limiting neurological condition. It includes seizures, intellectual disability and a range of associated health conditions. Around one in every 15,000 babies in the UK will be born with Dravet Syndrome.

Mike said:

'Dravet Syndrome UK are wonderful advocates and supporters of my patients and patients across the UK living with Dravet Syndrome. It's a pleasure to do what I can to raise awareness and support their fantastic work'

If you'd like to show support for Mike, Henry and Dravet Syndrome UK you can find Mike's justgiving page here: www.justgiving.com/page/micheal-taylor-2?utm_medium=FA&utm_source=CL

If you' like to take on Every Day in May for Dravet, find out more here: www.dravet.org.uk/event/every-day-in-may-for-dravet-2026/

Good luck to Dr Mike and Henry! 🏃

Happy Easter to all our patients, families and colleagues! 🐣

Earlier in the week a panel of bunny-eared egg-sperts judged our annual Easter Crafts Competition for patients and hospital staff!

There were some cracking entries including Easter Bonnets, decorated eggs and a giant bunny from Children's Outpatients Department who got stuck in a lift on the way! (apparently he was hopping mad...)

Patients and families gathered in Reception to present their crafts to the judges. Patients who couldn't attend had their crafts displayed by our fabulous Play Team.

Judges were egg-static with the standard of crafts and awarded lots of prizes to patients and staff.

Thank you to Leeds Hospitals Charity for supporting this year's craft competition with craft resources and prizes.

Well done to everyone who entered and congratulations to everyone who won a prize!

Happy Easter to all our patients, families and colleagues!

Automated text messages help to raise awareness of Martha's Rule

Leeds Children’s Hospital is the first children's hospital in the UK to launch a new fully automated initiative to increase awareness of Martha’s Rule and reduce barriers to parents accessing the service.

Martha’s Rule is a national patient safety initiative to support the early detection of deterioration by ensuring the concerns of patients and families are listened to and acted upon.

Starting in March 2026 automated text messages have been sent to parents and carers within four hours of every child's admission to Leeds Children's Hospital. Texts contain information about Martha's Rule and how parents and carers can raise concerns if they think their child's condition is deteriorating during their admission.

Leeds Children's Hospital has had a parent escalation pathway in place since 2022. If concerned about deterioration, parents and carers can request a rapid review from the Leeds Inpatient Outreach Nursing Service (LIONS). The new text message service is increasing awareness and improving access to this service.

Use of bots to scan admissions and send text messages automatically ensures that no one is missed. Access to information on a smartphone is more equitable - compared to a traditional poster or leaflet - because it can be easily translated or presented in an accessible format, and it's much harder to lose!

During the first month of this initiative we caught up with Francesca when she was caring for her son - 19-week-old Junior - in Leeds Children's Hospital. Francesca had received the text and told us:

'It's brilliant. Having it on your phone means it's quick, it's in your hand, it gives you the opportunity to read more about Martha's Rule in your own time... Martha's Rule is so important, it makes you feel heard and it could save a life'

Lifetime Achievement Award for Dr Susan Picton!

Dr Susan Picton was recently presented with a 'Lifetime Achievement Award' by the Children and Young People’s Cancer and Leukaemia Association (CCLG) at their Member Awards hosted in Manchester.

Susan is a Consultant Paediatric and Adolescent Oncologist here at Leeds Children’s Hospital where she recently took on the additional role of Interim Clinical Director.

The Lifetime Achievement Award recognises Susan’s 40 year contribution to children’s cancer, including 30 years here at Leeds. The award nomination referenced Susan’s contribution to continuous improvement in patient care, clinical research, development of national guidelines as well as various regional and national leadership roles.

The award also recognised Susan’s considerable contribution to children’s cancer services in developing countries. Susan founded and continues to advise a chemotherapy service for Ugandan children with retinoblastoma. She is also Lead Doctor for a twinning children’s cancer programme between Cameroon and Leeds as part of the World Child Cancer initiative.

Susan was presented with her award by Dr Sarah Stoneham (Chair of CCLG)

Susan said:

'I have enjoyed all of my career but particularly my time here in Leeds. I have seen the chances of survival improve hugely in almost all childhood cancers during this time. I have been fortunate to be able to work with colleagues from around the world in clinical trials and I have loved working in Africa developing affordable treatments for children in Cameroon and Uganda'

We are extremely proud of Susan’s achievements and we’re delighted that she has been recognised with such a fantastic award!
