Amy's artwork is helping to normalise diabetes technology for patients in Leeds.
20-year-old Amy from Leeds recently progressed from our Children’s Diabetes Service onto adult services within Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
Amy has been under the care of the children’s team since she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was just six years old! As part of her transition to adult services, Amy has created a beautiful painting which she has donated to the Children’s Diabetes Centre at our St James’ University Hospital site.
Amy was inspired by her experiences as a young person with Diabetes and wanted to create something that would support other children and young people in the service.
Amy said:
‘When I was younger it was really hard to accept diabetes because other people didn’t know what it was. I never saw characters in books and TV who had the physical features that I had. I wanted to normalise some of the technology, how it’s used and raise awareness of the condition’
The picture features fairy-tale characters with diabetes specific technology such as insulin pumps and glucose monitors.
Amy, who now works at Pinderfields Hospital, also wanted thank the children’s team who have looked after her:
‘The support and care on a personal level have made a huge difference to my experience. They have helped me to be confident, they have supported me through school and always ensured that my needs are met wherever I am’
Amy’s picture is now proudly hanging in the waiting room where it can be seen by patients and their families as they attend clinic.
We want to say a huge thank you to Amy for creating this brilliant artwork for our patients and wish her well as she progresses onto adult diabetes services.
