Clinical study shows that Support Wear could reduce the risk of a hernia and improve quality of life with a stoma. This study introduced Comfizz to it's new ostomy patients, educated them about the risks of developing a hernia and followed them up over 12months, increasing the level of support wear if/when needed. They measured the quality of life score and the incidence of hernias in this population compared to ostomates in that hospital from the previous year who did not receive suppport wear and education. The results were very significant, affirming the benefits of support wear.

ARE YOU GETTING A FAIR SERVICE FROM YOUR NHS?
Over the last 25yrs, we've started to notice some big discrepancies in what is allowed for support wear on prescription depending on where you live. Some people have no problems getting their 6 or more garments per year to keep themselves fully supported every day whereas other people are being told they can only have one or none at all!

I question the basis on which these decisions are being made? Are they made from in depth knowledge of the products, the functions and benefits or is it just someones personal opinion who likely does not have specialist knowledge of support wear.
How can it be that your ostomy support needs differ based on your postcode rather than true risk factors such as age, weight, activity levels etc Has anyone done any research into the postcode effects on ostomy support needs and hernias? 🤔
Sadly we've also noticed that some regions will only consider prescribing to you when you have a hernia. The research shows that it would be much more efficient to be prescribing support wear as a preventative measure against developing a hernia (not to mention all the quality of life benefits wearing stoma support wear can give).
I know some people would argue that support wear is a cost burden to the NHS, however the relative cost of support wear compared to pharmaceutical prescribing is tiny and the costs of managing a hernia is also much higher, not only to the NHS but also to the individuals quality of life.
What have your experiences been? Do you think support wear should be prescribed or bought privately? Do you think it would be better if it was prescribed based on individual needs or a blanket maximum limit per year across the country for anyone living with an ostomy?
