September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month ❤️‍🩹

Every 20 minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with blood cancer — but too many people still don’t know the symptoms.

Look out for:

Unexplained bruising or bleeding

Persistent fatigue

Frequent infections

Night sweats

Unexplained weight loss

Early diagnosis saves lives. Let’s spread the word, support those affected, and push for more research.

🙏We have received some lovely feedback from one of our patients, which we would like to share with you (with permission):

I just wanted to provide some feedback following a visit to the practice yesterday.

I brought my 8 year old daughter in to an appointment with Dr Rohma Tahir.

My daughter was very nervous as she can’t remember ever visiting a Doctor before and was unsure what to expect.

Dr Tahir was amazing with her. She spoke directly to her, confirming everything with her, really taking her time to explain the situation and treatment options and showed real empathy towards her.

It made such a massive difference with my daughter commenting last night how kind she was and that she won’t feel so nervous next time.

I just wanted to take the time to say thank you and share our positive experience.

Our long-serving GP Partner, Dr Ellis Rickwood, will retire at the end of September 2025.

Dr Rickwood joined Crossley Street Surgery as a Partner in the practice back in 1996, and took over from Dr Hall as Senior Partner in 2020.

Over the course of his 29 years’ service to the community, Dr Rickwood has provided expert care to a huge number of people in Wetherby. Arriving as a young, keen, rugby-playing doctor, adapting from handwritten records and prescriptions (we have doubts over their legibility) to computerised healthcare, he has become a senior figure both in local healthcare and in prison and addiction services.

We trust he will be looking forward to spending more time with his family and friends, travelling, getting to more live music gigs and major sporting events and following his beloved Aston Villa - but we know he will continue to pop in from time to time... he never can stay away from joint injections!

Dr Rickwood says, “I will miss Crossley Street Surgery immensely but it is time to hand over the reins to my fellow partners. I know they will continue to look after the practice with care and dedication. They are a truly fantastic bunch as are all the staff at the surgery.

"I have met and worked with some great patients and colleagues over the years. I still maintain we all learn something new from somebody each and every day which is why it has been such a privilege to be part of the Crossley Street Surgery journey.

"However, I am looking forward to stepping away to have time for a few more foreign trips (with just the right balance of sun and snow!), exploring some new challenges and, occasionally, just kicking back and relaxing...”

Dr Salisbury will be taking over the role of Senior Partner, supported by the other partners; Dr Lawrence, Dr Kitchen, and Dr Jones, and the wider Crossley Street Surgery team.

We’re sure that our patients will want to join us in sending our huge thanks to Dr Rickwood, and wishing him a very happy retirement. He will be much missed by all of us here and, we’re sure, by the very many patients he has looked after over the years.

The Practice would like to gather retirement wishes from patients to pass to Dr Rickwood. If anyone would like to send a message to be included, please email crossleystreet.enquiries@nhs.net with the subject line “Dr Rickwood retirement”. We will also share any comments you may wish to leave under this post.

💧 Stay hydrated – Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty
🧢 Dress for the weather – Light, loose clothing and a hat if you go outside
🚫 Avoid strenuous activity – Especially in peak heat hours
👀 Check in on others – Make sure neighbours, friends, and family are coping

If you feel unwell in the heat – such as dizziness, headache, or feeling sick – move to a cool place, drink water, and rest. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist.

Please take care and help each other through the hot spell. đź’™

Reducing Avoidable Medicines Waste - Only order what you need đź’Šâś…

West Yorkshire Health & Care Partnership is reminding patients to only order medicines they genuinely need when requesting repeat prescriptions. Every year, unused medication costs the NHS millions 💷 and contributes to unnecessary waste 🌍.

By checking what you already have at home and only ordering what’s needed, you can help reduce waste, protect the environment, and make sure NHS resources 🏥 are used where they’re needed most.

🧡 August is Psoriasis Action Month (UK)! 🧡

Psoriasis affects around 1.8 million people across the UK — yet it’s still widely misunderstood.

This month, we’re shining a light on this chronic, often invisible condition. Psoriasis isn’t just a skin issue — it’s an autoimmune disease that can impact physical and emotional wellbeing.

📣 Let’s take action:
âś… Learn more about psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis
âś… Challenge the stigma and support body confidence
âś… Share resources and raise awareness
âś… Encourage open conversations with GPs and dermatologists

Whether you live with psoriasis or support someone who does, your voice can make a difference. đź’¬

Patient Services & Data Administrator

📍 Crossley Street Surgery, Wetherby
đź•’ Part-time (25 hours)

Are you organised, friendly, and ready to make a real difference in people’s lives every day?

We’re on the lookout for a Patient Services & Data Administrator to join our warm, dedicated team here at Crossley Street Surgery – a well-established, forward-thinking GP practice in the heart of Wetherby.

📞 Confident phone manner
🧠 Good with systems and attention to detail
❤️ And above all – a kind, can-do attitude

This role is perfect for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys variety in their work, and wants to be part of a supportive and passionate team.

🌟 Why join us?
We’re proud to be a friendly, inclusive and values-driven practice with a strong focus on patient care, teamwork, and staff wellbeing. We prioritise continuity of care, innovation, and mutual support – and we're lucky to have a brilliant admin team that’s right at the heart of what we do.
