May is Mental Health Awareness Month — a time to check in, reach out, and remind ourselves that none of us are meant to do life alone.

At VINT – Veterans In Need Together, we know that connection isn’t just “nice to have” — it’s essential.

Whether it’s meeting up for a simple cuppa, going for a walk, or heading out on a bigger adventure, spending time with others can make a real difference to how we feel. It’s in those moments — the shared laughs, the quiet understanding, the “you alright?” that actually means something — that we start to feel like ourselves again.

For many veterans, life after service can feel isolating. The structure, camaraderie, and sense of belonging can be hard to replace. That’s why making the effort to connect, even in small ways, matters more than people often realise.

Social connection can:

Lift your mood and reduce feelings of loneliness

Give you a sense of purpose and belonging

Help you process thoughts and experiences

Remind you that support is out there — and that you’re not alone

You don’t have to be at your best to show up. You don’t need to have everything figured out. Sometimes just being around others, even in silence, is enough.

So this month, consider reaching out:Message a mate.Join us for a brew.Say yes to that walk.

Because together is stronger.

As we begin Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to remind everyone that mental health is just as important as physical health.

We often talk about looking after our bodies staying active, eating well, attending check-ups but looking after our minds deserves the same attention and care. Stress, anxiety, trauma, and emotional struggles can affect anyone, and ignoring them can be just as damaging as neglecting our physical wellbeing.

For the veteran community, this message carries even greater importance. Many veterans face unique challenges after service, and too often suffer in silence. Reaching out for support is not weakness — it is strength. Taking time to talk, to rest, to seek help, and to support one another can make all the difference.

This month, let’s help break the stigma surrounding mental health. Let’s encourage open conversations, check in on our mates, and remind one another that asking for help is a sign of courage.

Look after your mental health just as much as your physical health — because both matter.

From all of us at VINT we stand together in support, awareness, and hope.

❤️🖤 Sometimes the best medicine is as simple as stepping outside.

A bit of sunshine, fresh air, and a short walk can do wonders for your mental health. The sun on your face helps lift your mood, boosts your vitamin D, and gives you a chance to clear your head. Even a gentle walk around the block can ease stress, reduce anxiety, and help you feel more grounded.

For veterans, getting outdoors can be a powerful way to reconnect — with nature, with your community, and with yourself. You don’t have to go far or walk for miles. Just taking that first step outside can make a real difference.

If today feels heavy, try giving yourself ten minutes in the daylight. A walk in the sun might not fix everything, but it can help lighten the load.

You’ve faced challenges before — this is one small step that supports your wellbeing.

Tomorrow night (Wednesday), all three of our veteran support groups are open — and you’re invited.

If life’s feeling heavy, come and share the load. Whether you want to talk things through or just sit with people who understand, you’ll find a warm, supportive space here.

What makes us different?
We have our own fully trained counsellor, Mark Smith, Mark Smith Counselling, offering free support to all members. He also attends our sessions, so if you’d like to meet him in person, just message us and we’ll let you know which group he’ll be at.

There’s no pressure — just people who get it.

Stop putting off your mental health. Make yourself a priority. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

We’re excited to be at the Morley St George’s Festival tomorrow!

If you’ve been thinking about joining one of our groups, why not come along and have a chat with us? It’s a great chance to find out what we’re all about, meet the team, and see how we support local veterans in our community.

We’ll also have our world-famous Hook-a-Duck and a raffle, with all funds raised helping us continue the work we do for local veterans.

We’d love to see plenty of friendly faces, so please come by and say hello!
