Thomas’s Fight against Leukaemia

Thomas had his in person Oncology appointment today, just to make sure things are all okay. He is now on 6 monthly check ups which is all good news and no signs that anything isn’t just perfectly normal on the ‘C’ front. Anyway, we had a few things to discuss. Thomas is still getting a lot of joint pain and seems to have injured his wrist. Hopefully it’s nothing too bad but he was having none of it when they mentioned about a n x-ray. I will try to get him seen but I guess his appointment today was over an hour late so he had already had enough and he does get stressed out going into hospital again. Anyway, he still is suffering with the pains and has a few other issues which maybe linked to the chemotherapy drugs that he had for so long. At the end of the day though he is Cancer free still now, and thinking back to being in that clinic today when he was so much smaller and weaker I never thought this day would come… now look at him.

Anyway, I am hoping that he will continue to do his best, get stronger every day and grow up to be a happy, healthy young man. I mean he is growing so much it won’t be too much longer before he is taller than me 🫣 and I am 5ft 9!!! 😱

September is Thomas’s 11th Birthday and also childhood cancer awareness month so we will be hopefully doing a fund raiser for this for his special named fund with CCLG.

If anyone has any prizes they could potentially donate we would be so grateful. Thank you so much to LaserZone Leeds for their donation of Mini Mission tickets. These will be added to the prize list and will start in September.

It started as a before Christmas way to make his own money to buy Christmas presents himself (he did super well!) it also allows us to donate more to his special named fund.

Hoping that little Harry the Hamster hangs on in there overnight. He’s 2 years 7 months old which is a very good age for a Syrian hamster but earlier tonight he flopped over completely whilst Thomas was cleaning the cage so thankfully he was with me anyway. He went completely limp and seemingly lifeless. I laid him down slightly upside down and rubbed his little chest and all of a sudden he started to move again 😱. I was so happy but also very concerned. I syringe gave him some water and for a bit he was staggering around. He seems absolutely fine now albeit a bit sleepy again now but has eaten some biscuits and had a bit of a drink so really hoping that he will be with us a bit longer. Thomas will be devastated. This is the hamster he wanted so long and for so long, he was allowed him when he’d finished his intensive chemotherapy and after loosing two of his adopted Shetland ponies very recently too, well Thomas is a bit teary at the moment. I sat Thomas down and told him what happened, we took some photos and Thomas has said goodnight so fingers crossed 🤞🏻 🙏🏼❤️🐹

Thomas had an appointment today to see about his pain as sadly even though he’s not on chemo anymore his pain hasn’t gone away, if anything it’s worse. I guess having nearly 4 years of chemo and multiple lumbar punctures etc can do that.
Anyway, as we are sat there in the waiting room waiting for what we found out was a Multidisciplinary meeting with various Drs and nurses from various departments, someone from the play team asks us if we want to go and meet the author of the book “We’re going on a bear hunt”. Michael Rosen. Thomas jumped at the chance, but it clashed with his appointment. We were amazed when the whole team of Drs and nurses agreed not only to let Thomas go and have his appointment after, but to come with us too!! So it was an entire Multidisciplinary bear hunt 🐻🐻🐻.

Massive shout out to the MDT team today at the LGI Paediatric department and of course Michael Rosen for making Thomas and many other children very happy! Thomas has always loved your books and it was amazing to have met you! ❤️🐻

I can’t tell you how relieve I am that Thomas is 10 today. Honestly, there’s been times I’ve worried we wouldn’t get here but last year on his birthday he rang that end of chemo bell loud and proud and this year marks 1 year in remission! I think about how 10 years ago today, at 14:13 you came into my life at a whopping 9lb 12oz and when I saw you, it was at that moment I knew what love was. I hope that now, you get to live your life, be you, and make lots more awesome memories together and with your friends. You’re growing up so fast, I can’t keep up! It doesn’t seem all that long ago I was changing your nappies and blocking out the noise of hearing such as paw patrol and Blippi for over 10 hours a day 🫣. Honestly though, I wouldn’t change a thing… I mean you getting sepsis and cancer wasn’t part of the plan of life, and I felt so helpless watching you go through all that, but I know it’s made you a very strong young man! Thomas, even though we have had an eventful 10 years so far, I love you with all my heart, unconditionally and I am so very proud of you. Lots of love always my little man. Mum #########x
