The Wharfedale Clinic

The Wharfedale Clinic www.wharfedaleclinic.co.uk The Wharfedale Clinic specialises in musculoskeletal medicine and musculoskeletal / sports injuries.

The musculoskeletal system comprises the bones, joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons, along with the supporting blood and nerve supplies. From back pain to sciatica, Achilles tendinopathy to osteoarthritis, the range of musculoskeletal conditions and injuries is vast. Indeed, such conditions are the second most common cause of disability in the UK. For this reason, we have brought together a multidisciplinary team of independent practitioners able to provide prompt, comprehensive and expert treatment when you need it, as well as advice on injury prevention. The clinic is owned and operated by Dr MB Speight and Mrs L Speight LLP.

Martyn has asked me to thank all of the people who have supported him over the years, and we in turn wish him well in his retirement. https://wharfedaleclinic.co.uk/dr-martyn-speight-announces-his-retirement/

When lockdown closed the gyms, we were able to provide clinic space to PhysioAction so that they could continue seeing patients. They say that every cloud has a silver lining and this gave us an opportunity to work alongside their brilliant team which we very much enjoyed. Although they are now open again at all of their usual venues, we are delighted that they have opted to continue to offer services at our clinic in Guiseley. To book a physiotherapy appointment with Gemma, please contact PhysioAction on 0113 268 7578.

Many of us often use our laptops at home for short periods, but with a lot of people now working from home via a laptop for long periods per day, we wanted to highlight the importance of your working posture to prevent pain.

Following our September post about Heidi who needed a specialist wheelchair, she's updated her Just Giving page today to say that she has now raised the funds she needs to purchase this. A big thank you to everyone who helped with donations to her crowdfunding page! You have helped to change this lady's life and we think you're brilliant! :)

It isn't every day that you meet someone who displays such a positive attitude to life in the face of adversity that it really makes you examine your own perspective. We've known Heidi for a number of years now and she is an incredible woman so it's upsetting to see her in such a difficult position. Heidi has been wheelchair bound for 25 years but has recently been diagnosed with a condition called PoTS which means that she has fainting attacks when she is sat up. For that reason, she's been lying in a hospital bed for 3 months at a cost of over £35k to the NHS and counting! She had a trial of a special wheelchair (pictured below) which allows her to control the fainting since she can change her position from sitting to horizontal at the press of a button whenever she feels that she is about to have a blackout. Cruelly, although she found this chair utterly transformed her quality of life as she trialed this in hospital, the trial ended and because the chair is not on the NHS "approved wheelchair list", she has no hope of getting one unless she raises the funds to buy it. As we understand it, the NHS have thus far not been able to find any other suitable chair on their approved list to meets this lady's needs. So here she is three months later, still in hospital lying flat on her back, during which time the money spent could have funded two of these chairs! Crazy eh? If anyone would like to help this lovely lady, even by donating the cost of a cup of coffee, I know she'd be extremely grateful.

Weʼre raising money to Help raise funds to buy the wheelchair to provide mobility and stop me from fainting when sat up. I need to get out of hospital ASAP. Support this JustGiving Crowdfunding Page.

Does physical exercise improve cognitive function in the over 50's? A systematic review published in the BJSM says that it does. Aerobic exercise, resistance training, multicomponent training and Tai Chi were all found to have a positive effect and a duration of 45-60 min per session and at least moderate intensity, were associated with benefits to cognition. Proof then that exercise is good for the body....and for the brain!
