Christopher’s journey shows how meaningful this role can be. He began his career in creative industries before caring for his grandfather inspired him to retrain, completing extensive training across 15 care disciplines and gaining hands‑on experience in West Yorkshire care homes.

He’s now a Healthcare Support Worker at Red Kite View’s Children and Young People Mental Health Services, where he supports young people through recovery, and says the most rewarding moments are seeing them safely return home.

Christopher hopes to specialise in mental health, progress into senior roles, and eventually mentor others starting their NHS journey. His message to anyone considering becoming a Healthcare Support Worker?

“Go for it. You’ll grow more than you ever imagined.”

If you’re curious about the role or want to hear more real stories like Christopher’s, join our webinar to apply.

Listening to our colleagues helps us improve.

The results of the NHS Staff Survey 2025 have been published today, with 1,504 colleagues at Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust sharing their views on working at our Trust.

Their feedback helps us celebrate what’s working well and understand where we can make meaningful improvements.

Our results highlight several positive areas:

• Compassionate and inclusive – our highest-performing theme, with 85% of staff saying their role makes a difference to service users.
• Flexible working – 81% of staff feel they can approach their manager about flexible working.

The survey also highlights areas where we need to improve, including morale and safe and healthy working.

Our teams will now use the data to help drive meaningful improvements, and we’re committed to turning these insights into action to improve staff experience and the care we provide.

“Young people were positive about the service . . . thought staff were kind and helpful, and that they could speak to them when they needed to.” That’s what inspectors found at our young people’s inpatient mental health units in Leeds and York last October.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) rated both Red Kite View in Leeds, and Mill Lodge in York, as “good” in their report published on 25 February 2026. The report goes on to say that “the service always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity,” and that “staff attitudes and behaviours when interacting with young people showed that they were discreet, respectful and responsive, providing them with help, emotional support and advice at the time they needed it.”

Our Assertive Outreach and Rehab services run a 10‑week music group — known as The Pot Noodles — where service users can learn instruments, sing, rap and write their own songs. And the impact has been incredible.

When Deputy Director Alison Kenyon visited the group, she met a member who shared that taking part has helped slow the progression of his Alzheimer’s and improved his memory. Others say the sessions help reduce anxiety, build confidence and create meaningful friendships.

One young man uses rap to express things he’s never felt able to talk about. A young woman says the sessions help her feel calm and connected, reducing her need to use substances. One participant even uses the group to practise his English through songwriting!

Led by Mark, a gentle and encouraging tutor, the workshops give people a safe space to be themselves — and they even record their own tracks at the end.

A special mention and huge thank you to Julie, who has supported the group from the start and helped make this creative space what it is today.

It’s for , and today we’re shining a spotlight on the incredible achievements of our apprentices across LYPFT. 💙✨

Every year, our Apprenticeship annd Employability Team comes together to host a very special event recognising all apprentices who have completed, or are due to complete, their programme between March 2025 and February 2026. It’s our chance to celebrate hard work, dedication, and the life‑changing impact apprenticeships have across our Trust. Our next celebration event is coming up at the end of March where apprentices, supervisors, managers, mentors and family and friends will come together.

This annual celebration also includes our Apprenticeship Awards, where colleagues nominate apprentices, managers, supervisors and mentors who truly embody our Trust Values of Simplicity, Integrity and Caring. 🌿💫
