Osteopathy is a system of clinical practice that looks at the individual from a mechanical point of view, it emphasises the importance of the musculoskeletal system to the overall health of the individual. Osteopaths believe that the musculoskeletal system contains all the elements to restore health if properly stimulated through various manual techniques, correcting problems in the body’s structure and providing an environment for the body to heal itself. Leek Deansgate Treatments include Back Pain, Neck Pain, Headaches, Arthritic Pain, Sciatica and Sports Injuries

I spent the weekend in London at the Annual Institute of Osteopathy Conference. This year it was celebrating 30 years since osteopathy was officially recognised and the Osteopaths Act 1993 was passed through Parliament, making osteopathy a protected title and, as such, illegal to call yourself an osteopath unless you have had the appropriate training. A key architect in pushing the Osteopaths Act through was the then Prince Charles, so it was a pleasant surprise when the speaker at the conference read out a personal statement from King Charles wishing the profession well.

It was a double celebration as we had our 30 year graduation reunion as well, so it was lovely to see some faces that I had not seen for quite a few years!

In July 2023 I would have been practicing osteopathy for 30 years over which time I have seen approximately 60,000 patients. I was able to calculate this figure because recently I had to take some time off work because of a neck and shoulder injury.

As a healthcare practitioner you do have to somewhat detach yourself from the patient once they have left the treatment room so that you can give 100% to your next patient. For me this experience was very self reflective to remind me to understand what patients go through prior to osteopathic treatment i.e. pacing around the kitchen at 3.00am trying to get comfortable. Thankfully I was able to access osteopathic treatment and do feel considerably better now.

To all patients, present and future, I do feel what you are going through.

Following on from the running course in London last weekend I decided to put into practice what I had learnt, so this weekend I did the night time Fan Dance in the Brecon Beacons. The weather wasn't great but something must have changed as I took 41 minutes off my previous best time!

I spent the weekend at a running biomechanics, technique and injury prevention course at Wasps' training ground in London with my colleague, Nick Vine.

I learnt a lot of new running related injury prevention and rehabilitation strategies, as well as discovering what a terrible runner I am!

We hope to be open soon, dependant upon the Government’s guidance regarding the return to work and management of COVID-19 lockdown.

During lockdown it has become apparent that upper back problems are a common presenting symptom. Here is a strengthening exercise for your upper back that my colleague, Nick Vine and I learnt during our Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilisation training over the last few years.

Lie on your front, with elbows on the floor. Stabilise your core then lift your upper back and neck simultaneously away from the floor ensuring elbows remain in contact with the floor. Do not look up, keep your neck straight.
Repeat this 5 times. As with any exercise, if it hurts stop.

At Leek Deansgate Osteopaths we take your health very seriously and because of that we have decided to change appointment times from 30 minutes to 45 minutes in light of the current Coronavirus outbreak. This is to allow 30 minutes for the appointment and then 15 minutes for you to leave the practice before the next patient arrives, in order to encourage social distancing and minimise patient to patient contact in the waiting room.

This weekend myself and fellow osteopath, Nick Vine, completed the Winter Woodhouse Fan Dance march. This is a brutal 30km course which involves 3 ascents and descents of Pan y Fan in the Brecon Beacons, which was compounded by adverse weather conditions involving driving rain and severe head winds making it very difficult to walk uphill - especially carrying a 35lb Bergen!
The Fan Dance is a re-creation of one of the challenges in the selection of the UK's Special Forces personnel.

Myself and Nick Vine spent Saturday doing Paras 10, which is a 10 mile run with a 39lb Bergen on and is part of the Parachute Regiment's training at Catterick army barracks in Yorkshire.

Definitely worth it as all proceeds go towards 'Support Our Paras' charity which helps former and serving paratroopers and their families.
