Yogis Assemble Namaste! My name’s Lisa and I’m a children’s yoga teacher, trained in ‘Kidding Around Yoga tm’

I teach yoga classes for children up to 12 years, as well as family classes for parents and children to join in together.

We had a wonderful and chilled morning. We warmed up with a song called ‘This Little Light of Mine’ by Haris Lender, Kidding Around Yoga. We practised yoga poses linked to characters from the Super Mario Galaxy movie and played a game with them. Our mindfulness activity was creating galaxies and we talked about ‘OM’ being the sound of the vibrations of the universe and had a go at creating ‘OM’.

This week we celebrated World Bee Day! 🐝

We talked about how bees help plants to grow and reproduce as we practised flower pose and tree pose.

We discussed how bees have different jobs to do in their colonies and work together as a team. The children then worked together to practise partner poses such as boat buddies, double candle, double tree and double chair pose.

Our yoga breathing was the Bee Breath. We breathed in through our nose and as we breathed out we hummed/buzzed.

We then mindfully created Bee Baths so that bees can safely get a drink without falling into the water. The children decorated the outside of their Bee Baths with acrylic paint pens. They then added pebbles, rocks and shells so that the bees have something to land on while getting a drink. Once the children took the Bee Baths home they needed to add a little water and place it in a sunny spot outside.

🐝 The benefits of Bee Breath-

* Calms the nervous system
The humming vibration can help reduce stress, anxiety and agitation.

* Improves focus and concentration
Many people use it before meditation, studying, or sleep because it helps quiet mental chatter

* Relieves tension and frustration
The vibration around the face and skull can feel soothing during emotional overwhelm.

* Supports better sleep
Practicing for a few minutes at night may help the body transition into relaxation.

* Enhances breath awareness
It trains slower, steadier breathing patterns.

Last week was International Guide Dog Day. We practised puppy pose and downward facing dog pose while we talked about the amazing things guide dogs do.
Our mindfulness activity was creating an origami dog/puppy.

🐶 Puppy Pose key benefits:

Opens the chest and shoulders – helps counteract slouching and desk posture
Stretches the spine – lengthens your back without putting pressure on the lower spine Calming effect – often used in restorative or relaxing yoga sessions.

🐕 Downward-Facing Dog key benefits:

Full-body stretch – targets hamstrings, calves, shoulders, and spine
Builds upper body strength – engages arms, shoulders, and core
Boosts energy – often used in our Sun Salutations.

Putting a positive note in your child’s lunchbox might seem small, but it can have a surprisingly meaningful impact on their emotional well-being and development. Here’s why it works:

🩷1. Boosts confidence and self-esteem
A simple message like “You’ve got this!” or “I’m proud of you” reinforces a child’s sense of worth. Over time, these small affirmations help build a stronger inner voice.

🩷2. Strengthens your bond
Even when you’re apart during the day, a note reminds your child that you’re thinking about them. It creates a sense of connection and security.

🩷3. Provides emotional support during the day
School can be stressful—socially, academically, or both. Finding a kind message at lunchtime can be a calming reset and help them get through the rest of the day.

🩷4. Encourages a positive mindset
Consistent exposure to encouraging words can shape how children talk to themselves. It subtly teaches optimism and resilience.

🩷5. Makes lunchtime something to look forward to
It adds a small element of surprise and joy to their routine, which can be especially helpful if they’re picky eaters or feel anxious at school.

🩷6. Models kindness and empathy
When kids receive kind messages regularly, they’re more likely to mirror that behavior with others—friends, siblings, even teachers.

In May half term our children’s yoga session is linked to Super Mario Galaxy!

It takes place at Yugen Yoga Studio, London Street, Leek, ST13 5JY. 10:00-11:00am.
There is a seating area for parents to wait or you are welcome to drop your children off.

Here are some of the benefits of children’s yoga-

🧘‍♂️ Physical strength and flexibility
Simple poses help build core strength, balance, and coordination.

🧘‍♂️ Focus and concentration
Following sequences and holding poses trains attention span. This can carry over into classroom tasks and daily routines.

🧘‍♂️ Emotional regulation
Breathing exercises and relaxation techniques give children tools to calm themselves when they feel overwhelmed, anxious, or frustrated.

🧘‍♂️ Confidence and self-esteem
As children learn new poses and notice their progress, they develop a sense of achievement and belief in their abilities.

🧘‍♂️ Body awareness
Yoga helps kids understand where their bodies are in space, improving coordination and reducing clumsiness.

🧘‍♂️ Stress reduction
Even young children experience stress. Gentle movement and breathing can help lower tension and promote a sense of calm.

🧘‍♂️ Creativity and imagination
Many children’s yoga sessions include storytelling—turning poses into animals, adventures, or journeys—which stimulates imagination and engagement.

🧘‍♂️ Social skills
Practicing in a group encourages cooperation, listening, and respect for others’ space.

🧘‍♂️ Better sleep and relaxation
Regular practice can help children wind down more easily, supporting healthier sleep routines.

This week we celebrated National Dolphin Day! We practised dolphin pose and included it in our salutation sequence.

In our mindfulness craft the children created dolphins in the ocean using a variety of media. The children attached their dolphins to lollipop sticks and moved them to look like they were jumping waves. 🌊 🐬

Dolphin Pose (a yoga pose similar to downward dog but on the forearms) can be really beneficial for kids when taught safely and playfully. Here’s what it helps with:

Arts and crafts are strongly linked to mindfulness because they naturally draw your attention into the present moment. Here’s how they support a mindful state:

🎨 1. Focus and “flow”

Activities like painting, knitting, or pottery can lead to a state known as Flow State—where you’re fully absorbed in what you’re doing. This reduces mental noise and helps you stay present rather than worrying about the past or future.

🧠 2. Reduced stress and anxiety

Repetitive, hands-on actions (e.g., stitching, coloring) calm the nervous system. Studies in Art Therapy show that creative activities can lower cortisol (stress hormone) levels and promote relaxation.

🌿 3. Sensory grounding

Crafts engage multiple senses—touch, sight, sometimes even smell—which helps anchor you in the present moment. This is a core principle of Mindfulness.

💭 4. Non-verbal expression

Arts allow you to express emotions without needing words. This can be especially helpful when feelings are complex or hard to articulate, supporting emotional awareness—a key part of mindfulness.

🕰️ 5. Slowing down

Crafts encourage patience. Unlike fast digital activities, they require time and attention, helping counteract the constant stimulation of modern life.

🌈 6. Increased self-awareness

As you create, you may notice your thoughts, habits, and reactions (e.g., frustration when something doesn’t go as planned). Observing these without judgment is a core mindfulness skill.

We celebrated St Patrick’s Day with different yoga poses including shamrock pose (flower pose), leprechaun pose (horse stance), pot of gold pose (happy baby pose), Saint Patrick pose (mountain pose) and Irish Jig pose (tree pose). We danced to Irish music and when the music stopped the children had to rush to the yoga pose card that was called out and create the pose. Our mindfulness craft was decorating shamrock templates using a variety of green media. ☘️ 🌈

So much love in our Valentine’s Day Yoga today! We meditated using the words love begins with me, practised our pranayama by breathing in through our noses and breathing out gentle through our mouths into our bubble wands. We practiced heart opening poses such as pigeon pose, cobra pose, bridge pose and dancer pose. In our mindfulness craft we created heart shaped mandalas and finished with relaxation time thinking about how much we are loved by people around us. We visualised a warm golden glow in our hearts which spread throughout our bodies. I wish all my yogis love, peace and light ✨
