MYTH: “Boys talk later than girls, so don’t worry.”

FACT: While some boys may develop language slightly later on average, communication milestones still matter for ALL children 💬

If a child isn’t meeting expected milestones, early support can make a big difference in their communication, confidence, and learning.

POV: you ask a paediatric speech therapist what’s actually in their therapy bag 👀

No gatekeeping here 🤍
I’m showing you the toys, activities and resources I genuinely use in therapy for early years, autism support & language delay 💬🧸

Warning: this reel is VERY chatty 😂 but keep watching because I’m sharing the resources that get the most engagement, communication and connection in my sessions ✨

Speech therapy does not have to look like sitting at a table 👏

Which resource should I show next? 👀

What started as a random chatty video about my day turned into something I couldn’t stop thinking about.
Because a question kept coming up that I think SO many parents need to hear.
If your child speaks more than one language at home and has been flagged for behaviour concerns..this one’s for you.

PEAL children are so often mislabelled as having behaviour problems, when actually what we’re seeing is an attention and listening difficulty rooted in language processing.
When a child is navigating two or more languages, the cognitive load is huge. Following instructions, staying focused, responding quickly - these are all harder when you’re still building your language foundation. And from the outside? It can look like they’re not listening. It can look like defiance. It can look like a behaviour issue.
It’s not. 💛

Before jumping to behaviour referrals, we need to be asking: what’s this child’s language background? What are they hearing at home vs. at nursery or school? Are their attention and listening skills being assessed with their language context in mind?

Save this to share with someone who needs to hear it. 💬

Does your child present as a shy talker? This is very common and can also present itself as “selective mutism” which we can go into more detail with in another post.

🗣Here are a few strategies you can put into place to support your child🗣:

1. The biggest thing is to remove all pressure, avoid prompting them and asking them lots of questions.. it will only add to them feeling the pressure and they are less likely to talk.

2. Pause, answer and respond once you / some else has asked your child a question.. let it be an easy, light and fun interaction.

Give lots of positive feedback to your child once you’ve had that conversation and be specific with your feedback. E.g. “I loved the smile you gave to Alice”.

Give lots of eye contact, praise and smiles to your child, make them feel empowered when they are talking, this will encourage them to communicate more and build confidence.

The goal is NOT to force them to talk, let’s model a safe communication experience that feels natural to them 💜💛💜

Happy Monday All! Hope you all have a positive week ahead soaking up the sunshine!☀️☀️☀️☀️

Here’s some vocabulary/ideas you can use with your little one to promote language whilst it’s summertime! 💝☀️😎🌼👍🏻

1. It’s hot (use the fan gesture or Makaton sign)
2. Water - you can use the word “more” after your child has a couple of sips to promote the word “more” as well.
3. Clothing vocabulary: dress, shorts, T-shirt, swimming costume, hat
4. Swimming - “splash splash”, water
5. Animals - Fishes, whale, shark, jelly fish
6. Sing baby shark, splish splash, 5 little ducks went swimming one day
7. Fruit vocabulary- Keeps your little ones refreshed and they are exposed to it repeatedly
8. Sun cream can be a fun process - “cream cream”, “this is the way we put on cream, put on cream, put on cream”)

Anything can be turned into a song! Remember your child will engage more and this encourages language development 🗣🗣🗣

YAY!!! Such a big word that catches everyone’s attention! When your child does something new and exciting don’t hold back .. say the word YAY!! They will be so excited and full of confidence! 🥳🗣

The word YAY helps with emotional growth, intelligence, understanding and promotes positive behaviour! 😊

The more you say it, the more your child will hear it, say it and eventually repeat it! It’s always great to accompany it with a clap. Clapping is a gesture and this tends to form before a word! 👏🏻

Happy Monday all ☀️😎☀️

Ignore the words and describe what you see! This is a great opportunity to keep your baby/toddler engaged and expose them to key words that are simple and relevant!

Remember to be consistent and use a parentese style to make your reading experience all the more fun! You can find out more about this on my course.

The more you expose your child to the word, the more they’ll understand it and eventually SAY it! The key is to keep your child engaged!⭐️
