The Natural Burial Company

The Natural Burial Company Caring for the bereaved and the environment.

Caring for nature and the bereaved, fighting to end funeral poverty, and ensuring a beautiful legacy for those in our care. Our aim is to establish areas of natural beauty where wildlife can flourish long into the future without the disturbances that modern life creates. A burial in our Woodland or Natural Burial Grounds is a statement of intent to establish, preserve and encourage wildlife in a w

orld where habitats are fast disappearing, by leaving our loved ones in gentle, respectful peace, amongst wild flowers, trees, birds and other flora and fauna.

Wonderful to see that the first trees we planted to negate the environmental damage of cremation are now blossoming.

Over the coming weeks we will be conducting spring maintenance at our natural burial grounds. This will include topping graves if required and seeding with flower meadow seeds. Plot owners are also welcome to seed and plant bulbs on plots and the surrounding area (not other plots) at the appropriate times of year. We simply ask that the burial ground remains looking natural and that plots are not manicured. We can provide you with seeds upon request.

We are very proud of our colleague Nina who has now conducted her first cremation services.

The Natural Burial Company took the decision to offer cremation as well as natural burial services after receiving many requests. This now means that we can complete all aspects of the service if cremation followed by Interment of ashes at our natural burial grounds is required. To help compensate for the environmental damage of cremation we also plant 3 trees for each cremation conducted.

We totally agree. There are many fantastic florists that ensure their tributes are as environmentally friendly as possible. Also remember that there are alternatives to florist foam (oasis) and plastic trays.

Sunday morning normally commences with an early trip to the supermarket to collect croissants – a weekend treat! On this particular morning, I was struck by the number of people in the store purchasing flowers; it was, of course, Mother's Day! Flowers have been symbols of love for thousands of years—essentially for as long as human civilisations have recorded emotional or ritual practices. A 2018 Life Cycle Analysis by Rebecca Swinn, now Innovative Farmers Manager at the Soil Association, highlighted a major environmental blind spot: the carbon impact of imported cut flowers. Her study found that imported mixed bouquets generate 10× the CO₂ emissions of British-grown equivalents, largely due to energy-intensive production and long-distance transport. A compelling case for sourcing sustainably — and locally.

After receiving many requests we are now proud to arrange cremation as well as natural burial services. To help mitigate the environmental damage caused by cremation we will plant 3 trees for each cremation we arrange.
