It is Stand Up to Cancer Day! This is Angela's cancer story.
Angela is fabulous! She has become our first volunteer Ambassador at Sue Young Cancer Support.
Here's Angela's story:
"I’m Angela 59 years old and I was diagnosed with breast cancer September 2022.
I received excellent care at Leicester Royal Hospital and Glenfield Hospital throughout my treatments. I had a lumpectomy of my left breast in October 2022. It was then when it hit me with reality of what I was going through. In January 2023 I had 6 cycles of chemotherapy. I felt grateful at the time that I didn’t experience fatigue, nausea and was able to walk 30 minutes each way when I was receiving chemotherapy.
Next I received 10 cycles of radiotherapy around June 2023. It has been a roller coaster time but I have been positive and proactive with the support of my family and friends who have been there for me.
I started coming to the Sue Young Support Centre in May 2023, attending yoga sessions to begin with. Then in June, 2023 I attended Reiki sessions which I thoroughly enjoyed. Since then I’ve had facial massages, reflexology, Energy Healing, head massage. I have also attended workshops, Sound Mediation, Tai Chi and a recent craft group set up.
I thoroughly enjoy all the treatments on offer at the centre and are local to me. It’s a friendly warm and welcoming support centre for anyone affected by cancer.
Since my time at the centre I have wanted to give back for all the support and services available. I’ve been busy getting involved and have introduced Sue Young Cancer Support charity to , which is a charity that makes items using parts of recycled bras. It raises funds for charities that have people affected by breast cancer. I have also volunteered by attending fundraising and awareness events at the centre and at other venues.
My second ‘ light bulb’ moment ( the 1st being contacting Bracrafts), was speaking to the manager of the African Caribbean Centre in Highfields Leicester. Subsequently there is going to be an event hosted at the African Caribbean centre with Sue Young Cancer Support, NHS services and other organisations attending on Wednesday 23rd October 2024. I am thrilled this event is taking place and will make a huge difference in highlighting awareness and services available to anyone affected by cancer.
My journey from the start of my diagnosis to now has been made me reflective, stronger and grateful. I can’t thank the centre enough and will continue to support them anyway that I can. By spreading the word of this amazing charity through volunteering, going to venues and dropping off leaflets. Thank you again!"
