What does adultification do to a child’s mental health?

Due to bias, Black children are often seen by adults as more mature and responsible than their White peers. This perception leads to harsher discipline, higher exclusion rates, and fewer chances to simply be children. This process is known as adultification and it takes a toll.

Children treated as older than they are often carry a psychological burden: anxiety, shame, trauma, and hyper-independence.

In this blog for , Dr Melernie Meheux and Professor Denise A Miller explore the emotional cost of adultification and how psychologists can recognise, challenge, and help heal its impact.
