We dont get enough Vitamin C today and reports of Scurvy making a comeback is concerning.
Our food does not contain enough of the Vitamin to provide the body all it needs.
We dont store Vitamin C, so we need a constant supply.
Supplements are usually Ascorbic acid(E300) which is processed through the urinary tract really quickly so its not retained in the body long enough. Ascorbic acid can also upset a gut thats damaged or be bladder irritative. In those cases Sodium Ascorbate (E301) form of Vitamin C would be a better choice.
Vitamin C is Important for cell protection and is crucial for the synthesis of Collagen for skin, cartilage and bone. It won't matter how much Collagen you take, without Vit C it will not do a thing!
The best supplement in natural form is Camu Camu or Acerola Cherry, available in powder form. These contain over 1,000mg per 100g. Other super sources of Vitamin C are Rosehips, sea-buckthorn, Guava, blackcurrant which are over 100mg per 100g
Average everday food sources under 90mg per 100g are:
