Personal Assistant, Sophie Raymond, is the latest winner of UHL’s Admin Star award.

Sophie was nominated for the exceptional support she provides to senior leaders across women’s and children’s services, working behind the scenes to keep processes smooth, colleagues organised, and enabling teams to focus on delivering patient care.

Head of Operations for Women’s and Children’s, Hannah Wingfield, said: “Sophie is one of the quiet, unsung heroes of the Trust. She is super responsive, proactive, and the very definition of a team player. Sophie keeps the wheels turning, often without realising the significant positive impact she makes for the team.”

Consultant Urologist and Andrologist, Miss Michelle Christodoulidou, is among 25 surgeons featured in an exhibition of photography celebrating the contribution of women working in surgery across the UK.

The ‘Insight: Portraits of Women in Surgery’ exhibition is currently on display at the Hunterian Museum, at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, in London.

Miss Christodoulidou has been a consultant surgeon at UHL since 2024, specialising in pe**le cancer and reconstructive surgery. Her portrait for the exhibition was taken by Medical Photographer, Tara Molloy, who has been a photographer at UHL for more than 20 years.

Miss Christodoulidou said: “Being featured in this exhibition has given me an immense sense of pride. It’s a great honour, and only possible with the encouragement and beautiful work by Tara.”

UHL consultant cardiologist, Professor Sir Nilesh Samani, has been honoured with the City of Leicester Award.

The award, presented by Leicester’s Deputy Lord Mayor of Leicester, Councillor Bhupen Dave, celebrates individuals whose work has made a profound and lasting difference to people in Leicester and beyond.

Professor Samani, who has spent more than five decades living and working in Leicester, said he was deeply touched by the honour. The recognition is especially moving as the nomination was made by longstanding Councillor and former Lord Mayor Manjula Sood, who passed away last year.

Professor Samani said: “I am truly honoured to receive this award. To be given such recognition from the city which has been home for me and my family for over 50 years and in which I have dedicated my working life, is extremely humbling.

“To have been nominated by Councillor Sood makes it even more special because of her own trailblazing achievements within Leicester. My clinical work and research has in many ways attempted to be just that – pioneering - for the benefit of others and I hope it has made and will continue to make a difference to people in Leicester and beyond for many more years to come.

“I am proud of my achievements to advance medical practice alongside hugely talented and dedicated colleagues who work hard every day to help save lives.”

Patients at UHL are benefiting from a major upgrade to MRI services with the installation of a new state-of-the-art MRI scanner at the Leicester General Hospital.

The Canon Vantage Galan Supreme 3T MRI is the first system of its kind in the UK and will enable UHL to deliver state‑of‑the‑art imaging services, supporting improved patient care and enhanced clinical outcomes.

Deputy Operational Lead for Imaging, Gemma Coles, said: “The new Supreme 3T MRI gives us some of the highest‑quality imaging available today. The clarity it provides helps clinicians make more accurate diagnoses, and it will allow us to reduce waiting times by increasing our capacity.

“Patients will notice the difference too; the scanner is quieter, more comfortable and designed with patient experience in mind. This is a positive development for our imaging teams and patients.”

The Glenfield Hospital’s Discharge Lounge plays a vital role in creating inpatient capacity by enabling safe and timely discharges. With strong pharmacy support, the team now consistently supports more than 100 patient discharges per week, helping to release beds and reduce pressure on the hospital’s Clinical Decisions Unit (CDU) and inpatient wards.

A pharmacy-led quality improvement project to prioritise TTOs (prescriptions for medications for patients to take home) for the Discharge Lounge and CDU is the latest initiative to make a difference to discharge times, following on from the introduction of a dedicated Discharge Lounge doctor, and Saturday discharge outreach support.

Team Leader, Sobha Kuttanpillai, said: “Our team has shown unwavering commitment to strengthening our ability to accept more patients and release beds earlier.”
