ANNA ASKS:
What do you remember having a surprisingly positive ending despite a stressful beginning?
ANNA’S ANSWER:
I did a first-ever sewing course last weekend. It started slow and we were all having a good laugh, but very quickly it developed into a very intense day.
There was so much to learn and so many details to retain, I was close to walking out before the end of the first hour. Nothing to do with the lovely lady who ran the course, but my head was spinning with all the information on how to cut the material and how to set up the electric sewing machine ready for use. It was only to make pyjama bottoms but the amount of information I had never heard of before was A LOT!
I stuck with it though, encouraged by the tutor who must have noticed my jaw on the floor, and came over to make sure I was following the steps safely.
I managed to cut the material following the pattern without losing any of my fingers, , sow the correct pieces together, overlock the edges and create a tunnel for elasticated band to go into.
It was exhausting, but having used the sewing machine several times for different pieces over the duration of the course, and seeing the end result looking fairly decent gave me a huge confidence boost and a feeling of elation. I could sew!!!
We all have powerful and resilient brains, and yes, learning a new skill starts with stress, anxiety and sometimes a feeling of not being able to cope, but the more we persevere the more we realise not only that we can learn a new skill fairly quickly, but also benefit from a huge boost in self-esteem.
