Emily Laithwaite and her incredible team in the Frailty Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Unit are making a real difference for older patients at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

The unit provides specialist care for people aged 65 and over who are frail, helping them avoid long waits in our Emergency Department. Instead, patients are seen quickly, assessed, and given a tailored care plan – often allowing them to return home the same day with the right support.

Since opening, the team has treated 1,929 patients, with 1,496 going home safely the same day – avoiding unnecessary hospital stays. ‘Hot clinics’ are also run to follow up with patients after discharge, ensuring ongoing care and support.

Emily, who is the Head of Service for Geriatric Medicine, said: "Our focus is on giving older people specialist care quickly, so they can stay at home whenever possible and avoid the complications that can come from long hospital stays."

Last week, UHL’s professional midwifery advocate and professional nurse advocate teams joined forces to raise awareness of their roles.

The teams spoke with colleagues to increase understanding of how advocates can support their wellbeing, professional development, and safe practice. At UHL, advocates offer one-to-one restorative sessions, group reflective spaces, and guidance on quality improvement projects, all aimed at supporting our workforce to thrive and deliver compassionate, safe care.

Lead Professional Midwifery Advocate, Eileen Cunningham, said: “The events were a great collaboration between our two services, with colleagues coming together to share their passion for advocacy.”

The volunteer-led shop trolley service is back, bringing snacks, newspapers and friendly chats to wards across the Glenfield Hospital.

Inspired by the classic hospital trolleys from years past, the project was revived by our volunteer services team, working with the hospital's independent shop to refurbish an unused trolley, supporting UHL’s sustainability goals along the way.

The service now runs from Tuesday to Friday and has become a welcome sight for patients and visitors alike. Thanks to charitable funding, a new trolley has recently been purchased to meet growing demand, helping raise £400 for Leicester Hospitals Charity in the process.

Plans are already underway to expand the service to the Leicester Royal Infirmary and the Leicester General Hospital soon.

Chris Day, our first very shop volunteer, said: “I really enjoy the chance to talk to patients and staff alike, with no pressure attached. It’s lovely just to say good morning and bring some normality into their day. I get a warm feeling when making someone smile or just being able to chat and laugh. I love it.”

We are proud to share that University Hospitals of Leicester midwife, Dalvir Kandola, has been named 'Midwife of the Year' at the 2025 Nursing Times Awards.

Her leadership in reducing inequalities and promoting equity in maternity care has made a truly positive difference for families. Congratulations, Dalvir, on this well-deserved recognition.

We recently hosted our third annual Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) conference to highlight how advanced practice is strengthening frontline healthcare and shaping future service delivery through leadership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Richard Mitchell, Chief Executive, opened the event and recognised the skills, expertise, and leadership ACPs bring to clinical teams. Attendees also heard from Sarah Meenan from the NHS England Midlands Advanced Practice Faculty, who shared regional and national updates on ACP development.

Reflecting on the event, Sally Coxon, Strategic Lead for Advanced Practice, said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity to bring together ACPs from across the Trust to share best practice, connect with colleagues, and celebrate the impact of Advanced Practice at UHL.”

Congratulations to Carrie Laverick, Executive Team Office Manager at University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL), who was named ‘Business Manager of the Year’ at the East Midlands PA Awards. The event celebrated excellence across administrative and support professions.

Carrie’s achievement recognises her outstanding leadership and the vital role she plays in supporting the work of executive directors. Her success also highlights the invaluable contribution of administration professionals within the NHS.

Alongside Carrie’s win, Sam Hayto, Executive Assistant to Group Chief Nurse, was nominated for ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award, and the team of executive assistants were shortlisted for 'Team of the Year' – recognising dedication, teamwork, and commitment of the entire executive support team.

Inside the Leicester Children’s Hospital there is a dedicated team of play specialists whose job is to help children prepare for medical procedures and feel more comfortable in a hospital environment.

The team of 28 covers all areas of the children’s hospital, and includes registered healthcare play specialists, play assistants, and apprentices. They help children prepare for medical procedures, using play to explain what will happen and to reduce fear and anxiety.

Senior Play Specialist, Sue Grewcock, who has been supporting children at the Trust for 45 years, said: "It’s the small things that stay with you, helping a child smile again after a difficult day or seeing them walk out of the hospital after a long stay. Being part of that journey is incredibly special.”
