🌿 Feeling Disconnected? Grounding Techniques Can Help 🌿

At Leicester Therapy, we understand how unsettling dissociation — that sense of feeling “zoned out,” disconnected from your body or surroundings — can be. Grounding is a powerful set of simple tools that help bring your attention back to the present moment, interrupt dissociative episodes, and support emotional regulation as part of your wellbeing toolkit.

Grounding works by helping you reconnect with your body, environment, and senses when thoughts or feelings start to drift. It can be especially useful in moments when dissociation starts to take over.

Here are 5 grounding techniques you can try:
✨ 1. 5-4-3-2-1 Sensory Grounding
Name:
• 5 things you see
• 4 things you can touch
• 3 things you hear
• 2 things you smell
• 1 thing you can taste

This helps anchor your awareness back in the present moment.

✨ 2. Temperature Reset
Hold something cold like an ice cube, or splash cool water on your face. Strong physical sensations help interrupt dissociative thinking.

✨ 3. Deep or Box Breathing
Slow breathing patterns like box breathing (inhale, hold, exhale, hold for equal counts) calm your nervous system and refocus your mind on your body.

✨ 4. Describe Your Environment
Talk out loud (or in your head) about what you see around you — “The sofa is grey, the sky outside looks cloudy…” — to bring attention outward instead of inward.

✨ 5. Use a Grounding Object
Carry something tactile — a stone, piece of fabric, fidget toy — and really focus on how it feels in your hand. This physical contact helps your brain realise you are here, now.

💛 Understanding Your Attachment Style Could Change Your Relationships 💛
Many adult relationship struggles are rooted in early attachment experiences. The way we learned to connect (or protect ourselves) in childhood often shapes how we relate to others today.
The Four Main Attachment Styles:

🔹 Secure Attachment
Develops when caregivers were mostly consistent, emotionally available and safe. As adults, secure individuals tend to trust others, communicate needs clearly, and handle conflict in healthy ways.

🔹 Anxious Attachment
Often forms when care was inconsistent — sometimes available, sometimes not. As adults, this can look like fear of abandonment, overthinking, needing reassurance, or feeling emotionally overwhelmed in relationships.

🔹 Avoidant Attachment
Can develop when emotional needs were dismissed or discouraged. As adults, this may show up as difficulty with closeness, shutting down emotionally, valuing independence to the extreme, or discomfort relying on others.

🔹 Disorganised Attachment
Often linked to trauma, abuse, or frightening caregiving. This can lead to a push–pull dynamic in relationships — wanting closeness but fearing it at the same time.

The important thing to know?
✨ Attachment styles are adaptations — not life sentences.
