Phase 7 – Closure: Ending on a High Note
Every EMDR session is carefully structured to ensure you leave feeling stable. Even if we are in the middle of a difficult memory, Phase 7 provides a "wrap-up." We use the self-calming techniques we practiced to bring your nervous system back to a state of equilibrium.
We might use a "Container" exercise to safely store away any unprocessed material until our next session. This ensures that the work we do in the therapy room stays in the room, allowing you to go about your daily life, work, and family time without feeling "raw" or overwhelmed. Your safety and stability are my absolute priority.

Healing isn't always a straight line, which is why Phase 8 is so vital. At the start of every new session, we re-evaluate the work we’ve done. We check to see if the targets we processed are still "clear" and if any new triggers have popped up during your week.
This phase ensures that your progress is permanent and that we are covering all the bases of your trauma, anxiety, or stress. We look at your past, your present triggers, and your future goals. Phase 6 – The Body Scan: Total Somatic Relief
The brain and the body are deeply connected. Even when we think we are "over" something, our body might still hold onto the stress in the form of a tight chest, a knotted stomach, or shallow breathing.
In Phase 6, I will ask you to think about the original target and the positive belief while mentally scanning your body from head to toe. We are looking for any lingering traces of physical tension. If we find any, we continue processing until your body feels completely neutral and relaxed. EMDR is a full-system reset; we ensure you feel calm not just in your thoughts, but in your physical self.

Phase 5 – Installation: Rewriting Your Internal Script
Once the negative sting of a memory has been cleared, we don't just leave an empty space. Phase 5 is about "Installation." We take the positive belief you want to have about yourself—such as "I am resilient," "I am safe now," or "I did the best I could"—and we use further bilateral stimulation to strengthen it.
We measure how "true" this positive belief feels in your gut. We work until that positive thought feels stronger than the old, negative one. This phase changes your self-image, helping you move from a "victim" mindset to a "survivor" mindset, and eventually, to a place of thriving.

Phase 4 – Desensitisation: Moving the "Stuck" Files
This is where the transformation happens. When we experience trauma, the brain often fails to process the information correctly; it gets "stuck" in the nervous system. In Phase 4, we use Bilateral Stimulation (BLS)—usually through guided eye movements, hand-tapping, or audio tones.
This stimulates both sides of your brain, allowing the "stuck" memory to move from the emotional, reactive part of the brain to the logical part. You aren't "forgetting" what happened, but you are lowering the volume on the pain. Clients often describe this as the memory finally feeling like it’s "in the past" rather than happening right now.

Phase 3 – Assessment: Pinpointing the Target
Many people feel overwhelmed by a general sense of "anxiety," but EMDR works by being specific. In Phase 3, we select a "Target Memory"—the specific event or feeling that fuels your current distress.
We break this target down into four parts: a vivid visual image, the negative belief you hold (e.g., "I’m in danger" or "I’m not good enough"), the emotions you feel, and the physical sensations in your body (like a racing heart or a tight throat). By naming these components, we take the "power" away from the trauma and prepare it for processing. It’s about looking at the problem objectively so we can dismantle it together.

Understanding EMDR – Beyond Talk Therapy
