Parents! Uncorrected is a leading cause of avoidable vision impairment. Whether corrected or uncorrected, myopia has an influence on the quality of life and social domains of a young person - like performing poorly in school. Here’s how you can help your child’s eye health.

Stay informed: Book an eye examination for your child with an eye care professional before they commence schooling and at regular intervals thereafter.

Take time out: get your child to take breaks from near based tasks like playing video games, and get them to look or get outside…

Get outdoors: get your child to skip, hop & move outdoors as a daily routine. Short walks, looking outside the window, anything that stretches the vision into the distance to help reduce risk.

If your child is already myopic, talk to your eye care provider about how you can slow progression and get a myopia management program.

It is myopia awareness week

One of the most important thing you can do is get your child’s eyes checked. A comprehensive eye exam is the first step you can take towards slowing the progression of myopia, or even to see if it’s a concern for your child.

Myopia can develop at such an early age so catching it early on is extremely vital to helping slow the progression.

There are lots of ways to help slow myopia such as specially designed spectacle lenses and contact lenses

Orthokeratology or OrthoK is a custom contact lens that is worn at night to gently reshape the cornea, providing clear vision during the day.

Here at Barot Eye clinic we remain committed to providing the very best patient care throughout the current COVID-19 outbreak. Rest assured, we are here for you throughout this very difficult period.

Unfortunately, we have now moved to operating an emergency ONLY service, and are closed temporarily for routine appointments, including eye examinations and contact lens aftercare. We will be in contact to recall you when it is deemed safe to do so.

If you have an eye emergency (including broken spectacles if this is detrimental to your well being) please send us an email to eyeclinicuk@aol.com If you do not have access to email, please telephone 01162610731 remember to contact us for eye emergencies rather than your GP or eye casualty.

Should you need to order contact lenses you can still do so, as our telephones will be diverting to a dedicated line. The telephone will be manned between 10am and 4pm.

The latest advice for contact lens wearers is that there is no evidence to date that contact lens wear should be avoided by healthy individuals, or that contact lens wearers are more at risk of contracting coronavirus then those wearing spectacles.

To help maintain healthy contact lens wear, all contact lenses wearers should follow correct lens wear and care instructions, including thoroughly washing and drying your hands before handling, applying and removing your contact lenses. Spectacles should be washed regularly using warm soapy water.

For more information about contact lens wear please visit www.bcla.org.uk

We urge all our patients to adhere to the latest guidelines and follow the advice given regarding social distancing, non-essential travel and self-isolating where appropriate.

We politely ask that if you have you been to an affected place in the last 14 days or had contact with somebody known to have Coronavirus and have either a cough, fever or shortness of breath then please do not come to the practice, stay at home and call NHS on 111 for expert advice.

Thank you. Stay safe and we look forward to seeing you all soon.
