Alex Allan Nutrition

Alex Allan Nutrition Alex Allan BSc (Hons) NT, Dip BCNH, mBANT, regCNHC is a Registered Nutritional Therapist and BANT-registered Nutritionist.

After spending more than 20 years working in a corporate environment, I moved to Nutritional Therapy after discovering the diet and lifestyle changes transformed my health. Since then, I’ve wanted to share that life-changing experience and help other people. Nutritional Therapy is the application of nutrition science in the promotion of health, peak performance and individual care. I use a wide range of tools to assess and identify potential nutritional imbalances and understand how these may contribute to an individual’s symptoms and health concerns. This approach allows me to work with individuals to address nutritional balance and help support the body towards maintaining health. Nutritional therapy is recognised as a complementary medicine and is relevant for individuals with chronic conditions, as well as those looking for support to enhance their health and wellbeing. I consider each individual to be unique and recommend personalised nutrition and lifestyle programmes rather than a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. I never recommend nutritional therapy as a replacement for medical advice and always refer any client with ‘red flag’ signs or symptoms to their medical professional. I will also frequently work alongside a medical professional and will communicate with other healthcare professionals involved in the client’s care to explain any nutritional therapy programme that has been provided.

❤️ Heart health isn’t just about cholesterol…
When we talk about cardiovascular risk, cholesterol often takes centre stage. But research over the past two decades has made something very clear: chronic inflammation plays a central role too.

In one of my recent blog posts, I explore:
• What chronic, low-grade inflammation actually is
• How it quietly affects blood vessels and plaque formation
• Why cardiovascular risk can remain high even when cholesterol looks “normal”
• How diet, stress, sleep and alcohol all interact to influence inflammatory load

This isn’t about fear or drastic changes. It’s about understanding why certain patterns matter – and why looking at the bigger picture is often far more helpful than focusing on a single number.

If you’re interested in heart health, blood pressure, cholesterol, or you’ve ever wondered why doing “all the right things” doesn’t always lead to the results you expect, this one is worth a read.

🧠 Confused by cholesterol?

I see this all the time in clinic: a cholesterol print-out, a few numbers circled, and very little explanation of what actually matters, or what to focus on first.

In one of my latest blogs, I break cholesterol down in a practical, evidence-based way and explain:
• What those common lipid markers really mean
• Why LDL cholesterol on its own doesn’t tell the full story
• Two lesser-known tests (ApoB and Lp(a)) that can add important context, especially if there’s family history
• Why heart health is about much more than chasing a single number

This isn’t about fear or “perfect” eating. It’s about understanding risk properly, asking better questions, and focusing your energy where it can really make a difference.

If you’ve ever been told your cholesterol is “a bit high” and left feeling unsure what to do next, this blog is for you.

We’re often quite good at noticing when our physical health needs attention… but our emotional wellbeing deserves just as much care. The two are deeply connected, and when one is out of balance, the other usually feels it too.

Here are 3 gentle, everyday ways to support your emotional health, no big overhauls required:
✨ Check in with yourself
Pause once a day and ask: How am I actually feeling right now? Naming emotions can be surprisingly powerful.
✨ Create small moments of calm
A few slow breaths, a short walk, stepping outside, or putting the kettle on without rushing, these tiny pauses add up.
✨ Nourish regularly
Eating consistently helps support mood, energy and resilience. Skipping meals or running on caffeine alone can take its toll emotionally too.

Supporting your emotional wellbeing isn’t about “doing more”, it’s about tuning in, being kind to yourself, and giving your body and mind what they need 💛

If emotional ups and downs are something you’re struggling with, personalised support can make a real difference.

I’m always here if you would like to find out what support I can offer. Link in bio to book a free call.

Today is Random Acts of Kindness Day, and it got me thinking. One of the simplest, and completely free, ways we can show kindness to others is to make the smile, or even better, laugh.

It might feel small, but it genuinely matters.
From a science perspective, smiling and laughter are associated with:
🔆Reduced stress hormones such as cortisol
🔆Increased release of feel-good neurotransmitters like dopamine and endorphins
🔆Activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, which supports relaxation and recovery
🔆Short-term improvements in mood and social connection

These effects have been observed in research looking at stress physiology, mental wellbeing and even cardiovascular health, reminding us that kindness and connection aren’t “soft” extras, they’re part of how our bodies stay well.

So today, if you’re wondering what you can do:
😊Send a message that makes someone smile.
😊Share a funny memory.
😊Check in with warmth and humour.

Those moments ripple outwards more than we often realise, for them and for you.

Happy Random Acts of Kindness Day 💜

Real Bread Week is a perfect moment to rethink what “healthy bread” really means 🍞

This no-knead wholewheat loaf is one I love for its simplicity:
✔ Only 4 main ingredients
✔ Long, slow rise for better digestibility and flavour
✔ Free from additives and ultra-processing
✔ Contains fibre, minerals, and B vitamins

Even if you’ve never baked bread before, this recipe is approachable, with minimal effort but maximum satisfaction.

I’ve shared the full method (plus a printable recipe card) inside my Facebook group 'Back to Health with Sarah and Alex'. 🔗Link in bio.

And if you’d like personalised support around food choices, you’re always welcome to book a free call to chat things through 💛

Have you ever made your own bread? Let me know if you think you might give this a go 💬

Your body is not something to battle with or criticise. It’s the most amazing thing you’ll ever own and should be celebrated. So today, whichever way you choose to mark Valentine’s Day (or not), try to find a little moment to ask yourself: What’s one small way I can show my body a little tender loving care today?
Because when you care for your body, even in little ways, you can really feel the benefit.

🥗 Simple food can still be powerful for heart health

Nutrition doesn’t need to be complicated to be effective. Some of the most supportive meals are built around a simple balance of healthy fats, fibre and plant compounds.

This omega-3-rich mackerel and beetroot salad is a great example.
It combines:
🐟 Oily fish, providing EPA and DHA to support inflammation balance and vascular health
✔️Beetroot, rich in nitrates and polyphenols to support healthy blood flow
✔️Fibre from chickpeas and greens to support gut and metabolic health

It’s quick to put together, uses everyday ingredients, and fits beautifully into a Mediterranean-style way of eating.

I’ve shared the full recipe (plus a printable PDF) inside my free Facebook group.

⭐ Client feedback that means the world to me

I’m always so grateful when a client takes the time to share their experience, because this is exactly why I do what I do 💛

“I’ve really enjoyed the 3 month course I did with Alex. We looked in depth at my habits around not just eating, but routines etc. I have taken so much away from it, having learned so much. I’ve new routines that are sustainable for long term health, which was my goal. I’ve cut out snacking habits. Am so much more aware of how foods, such as sugar affect me and my body and moods. I’ve lost weight, inches and managed my menopause symptoms using food and natural supplements. Alex is very knowledgeable, non-judgemental and supportive in her approach. It was great having that accountability. Thank you! You’ve literally changed my lifestyle for the better. A great investment in ME!” ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

What I love most about this feedback is the focus on sustainable change, not quick fixes, restriction or perfection, but learning how to support your body in a way that works for your life.

If you’re curious about how nutritional therapy could help you:
✓ feel more in control of your food choices
✓understand how food affects your energy, mood or hormones
✓build routines that support your long-term health
you’re very welcome to book a free 30-minute health review. It’s a relaxed, no-pressure conversation where you can share your goals and find out whether working together feels like the right next step for you.
