👁️ Who is at risk of glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a common eye condition that can damage your sight if it’s not picked up early – often without any noticeable symptoms.

You may be at higher risk if you:
• Are over 40
• Have a family history of glaucoma
• Are of African, Caribbean, or Asian heritage
• Have diabetes or high blood pressure
• Are very short-sighted or long-sighted

The good news? Regular eye examinations can detect glaucoma early and show changes before you notice any problems.

How is glaucoma detected?
Glaucoma is usually identified during a comprehensive eye examination, not just a sight test.

Tests that help detect glaucoma include:

- Eye pressure test (tonometry) – measures pressure inside the eye

- Optic nerve examination – checks for signs of damage

- Visual field test – looks for blind spots in side (peripheral) vision

- OCT scan – imaging that assesses the health of the optic nerve

- Corneal thickness measurement – helps interpret eye pressure readings

- Glaucoma often has no warning signs, but early detection can help protect your vision.

👁️ What is Glaucoma? 👁️

Glaucoma is an eye condition that affects the optic nerve – the part of the eye that sends visual information to the brain. When this nerve becomes damaged, it can gradually lead to a loss of vision.

What makes glaucoma particularly concerning is that it often develops slowly and painlessly, meaning vision changes may not be noticed at first. Over time, it can affect side vision and, if left untreated, may lead to serious sight loss.

At Observatory, we believe that understanding eye conditions is a crucial step in maintaining your eye health. 💙
