Why children regress when they feel overwhelmed 💛

“When life gets too big, children get small.”

Regression isn’t misbehaviour.
It’s a child asking for safety.

Children may regress when:
• life feels unpredictable
• there’s too much change
• they need calm, co-regulation

Through play therapy, children can slowly rebuild their sense of safety – in a way that feels natural and gentle.

Cold can calm the body faster than words ever could.

When emotions spike, the thinking brain goes offline.
So trying to “talk yourself calm” often doesn’t work.

But the body listens.

Cold is a shortcut straight to the nervous system.

A splash of cold water on your face.
A cold drink.
An ice cube in your hand.
A cool pack on your wrists or neck.

It’s not about being tough.
It’s about sending a clear signal:

“Pause. Reset. You’re safe.”

Cold activates something called the dive reflex.
It slows the heart.
It shifts the body out of fight or flight.
It brings attention back into the body instead of the spiral.

That’s why it can help with:

• Sudden anxiety
• Emotional overload
• Meltdowns or shutdowns
• Waking from nightmares
• Feeling wired or panicky

You are not calming with thoughts.
You are calming through sensation.

For adults, some people use short cool showers or cold water at the end of a shower. Not as punishment. Not as bravado. Just as a gentle nervous system reset.

For children and young people, keep it soft and safe:

Cold cloth on face
Cool drink
Splashing hands
Wrapped cool pack on wrists or neck

Never force cold.
Never scare the body into calm.
Regulation comes from safety, not shock.

Cold is just one tool.
It doesn’t replace connection, care or emotional support.

But sometimes, when feelings are loud and words are quiet…

Cold helps the body remember the way back.

What is your child trying to communicate through their behaviour? 💭

Join us online on Wednesday 24 September at 10:30am to 12pm, for our free masterclass: 'Behaviour as communication – looking beyond the behaviour.'

Led by Dr Karen Treisman MBE, this 90-minute masterclass will focus on the idea that behind every behaviour, there may be a story, a need, or an emotion that hasn’t yet found words.

When we shift from asking “What’s wrong with them?” to “What might have happened to them and what do they need now?” we open up space for greater empathy, insight, and connection.

We’ll also reflect on the emotional challenges of being on the receiving end of behaviour and how important it is to look after yourself in the process.
