We have got better at acknowledging we are struggling with our mental and asking for support, but some people still struggle to accept they need help and ask for help when they need it. If we had the flu we would take paracetamol and cold/flu remedies, if we broke a bone we could take pain relief and wear a plaster cast, so why do we still struggle to admit we are struggling with our mental health and ask for help.

You don't have to suffer in silence, the bravest step you can take, is the 1st step in admitting you need help and reaching out for support. At Trust in Counselling, we have a team of counsellors who aim to offer all our clients, a safe therapeutic space to explore the difficulties they are facing and help them navigate how to manage them effectively.

Have you or your child been diagnosed or waiting an assessment for ADHD?

Being diagnosed with ADHD can be liberating for some people, it enable them to understand themselves and how they see the world better. For others they can struggle to accept and feeling different from others can be a challenge for them.

At Trust in Counselling we have several counsellors who specialise in working with clients who have been or are waiting a diagnosis of ADHD. They have a deeper understanding of ADHD and the challenge's people may face, when undiagnosed, waiting assessment or diagnosed. They offer a non-judgemental space for you to explore your feelings around ADHD and how it impacts you and your life.

World Mental Health Day

If we break a leg we would think nothing of having a plaster cast on it to help it heal, if we have toothache or headache we would take pain relief to ease the pain. Yet, people struggle to ask for help with their mental health.

Clients often say, I should just be able to get on and manage! We are getting better at getting support, but for some people there is still some stigma and shame in asking for support for mental health difficulties.

Counselling offers a safe non-judgemental space to explore the difficulties you are facing, talking about your problems, helps to make sense of them and find healthier ways of managing them and moving forward in the direction you want to go on your unique journey.

Wednesday Insight into Couples Therapy

Couples Therapy Is a form of psychotherapy that aids couples /partners to communicate more effectively, in order to resolve conflicts and difficulties that arise in everyday life, but that can drive a wedge and lead to the breakdown in the relationship if not worked on effectively.

Some of the common themes explored in sessions are communication issues, emotional dysregulation and infidelity. Couples Therapy provides a safe space to reconnect and find healthier ways of communicating, helping to build and strengthen the relationship.

Your feelings are valid!

No one has the right to dismiss or say you are silly for the way you feel, we all react in a unique way to the challenges life throws our way, these are often based on how we have experienced and processed previous adversities.

Sometimes it's really difficult to find the words to explain how we are feeling. For instance, we may know we feel sad, but are not sure what's driving the sadness, it may be that were feeling powerless in the situation we have found ourselves. Counselling can help us to identify and delve deeper into our thoughts and feelings, allowing us to make sense of them and process them in a healthy way.

Keeping with the Iceberg theme, this anger iceberg shows all the emotions that drive anger. Anger is just the tip of the iceberg, quite often driven by lots of other emotions in reaction to events in our lives.

Anger when processed in a healthy way, is natural emotion to life's difficulties and challenge's. Sometimes when we haven't learnt to regulate our anger in healthy ways, that's when we display unhealthy thinking patterns and behaviours which can negatively ourselves and those around us. Each Wednesday we will give you a little insight into some of the different modalities of counselling our counsellors at trust in counselling offer.

This week is Person Centred Therapy, which was founded by Carl Rogers. It is a non directive, humanistic approach that focuses on the clients perspective. Counsellors aim to provide clients with a safe non-judgmental space to explore their feelings and enhance their self awareness, Carl Rogers believed that people have the capacity to self heal. that we know what hurts and what direction we must go in.

Carl Rogers stated
“It is that the individual has within himself or herself vast resources for self-understanding, for altering his or her self-concept, attitudes and self-directed behavior – and that these resources can be tapped if only a definable climate of facilitative psychological attitudes can be provided” (1980, p.115-117).

As counsellors we aim to offer clients the 6 core conditions, including, empathy, UPR, and congruence that Carl Rogers highlighted are needed for clients to feel safe to explore their feelings and make the changes needed.

Anxiety

Lot's of people struggle with anxiety, quite often the anxiety is driven by lot's of other feelings creating vicious cycles of thinking, which feed the anxiety. This can then stop us from doing things and withdrawing from social situations etc, because the negative thoughts convince us we can't do things.

Counselling can help us to break the cycles and learn healthier ways of thinking and behaving, which can improve not just our mental health, but also our quality of life, as we get back to enjoying the things that bring us joy.
