Alpha lipoic acid is a powerful antioxidant recognized for its many benefits including better health, beauty and weight loss. ALA if round in every cell of your body and is produced in your cells. However things like stress, disease, medications, toxins and aging can lead to reduced levels of alpha lipoic acid.
What makes lipoic acid special?
Other antioxidants are soluble only in water (like vitamin C) or only in fat (like vitamin E), limiting how your body can store and use them.
Alpha lipoic acid is classified as a phospholipid, meaning it is both water and fat-soluble and can work in all the tissues of your body, earning itself the reputation of “universal antioxidant”.
ALA is also unique because it helps your body restore or regenerate levels of vitamin C, vitamin E and glutathione, the mother of all antioxidants.
Alpha lipoic acid (ALA), also known as thioctic acid, is a naturally occurring short chain fatty acid which contains a thiol bond. It is an essential cofactor for energy production in the mitochondria. ALA is also a powerful antioxidant and a free radical scavenger. ALA is marketed in the US as an over-the-counter nutritional antioxidant supplement, alone or in combination with other antioxidants. In medicine, ALA has been shown to reduce symptoms of diabetic polyneuropathy, and several clinical trials established some efficacy and an excellent safety profile in this patient population.
Previous studies have suggested anti-obesity properties of ALA. In animal studies, it has showed that ALA supplementation promotes the reduction of body weight and fat mass by decreasing food intake and enhancing energy expenditure, possibly by suppressing hypothalamic AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activity. However, studies in humans with ALA supplementation are limited, and the results have been inconsistent. Some clinical trials have shown that ALA supplementation may help overweight or obese individuals lose weight, while other studies have observed no effects of ALA on weight. Nevertheless, ALA appears to have a wide range of beneficial effects on obesity related conditions such as insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and type II diabetes, including their complications such as vascular damage. single studies, we hypothesized that ALA is more effective than placebo for reducing body weight.
