Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) & Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) ⚡️

TENS utilises low-frequency electrical currents through skin surface electrodes to provide short term pain relief from both acute and chronic pain conditions using several mechanisms including pain gating, opioid & neurochemical mechanisms.

EMS is primarily used to stimulate muscle contractions. It helps prevent muscle atrophy in immobilised patients, recover muscle strength, size & function, aid in neuromuscular reeducation & reduce swelling.

The ACL, what is it and how does it get injured?

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is a major stabiliser of the knee joint, providing stability during jumping, running & cutting activities.

ACL injuries are fairly common, particularly within the sporting population & represent one of the most serious knee ligament injuries due to instability. They often require surgery followed by a long rehabilitation process >9 months.

Roughly 80% return to some form of sport. However, only around 65% return to their pre-injury levels of performance, and around 55% return to competitive sport.

Quality rehab is key for safely returning to sport post ACL injury, whether it was managed surgically or non-surgically!
This is important in order to:

• Restore strength & neuromuscular control
• Reduce re-injury risk
• Restore functional performance

What is Sports Rehabilitation?

Sports Rehabilitation is a specialised service combining the core principles of MSK Physiotherapy, Sports Science and Strength & Conditioning. Bridging the gap between Injury, return to participation in sport / functional movement as well as the application of injury prevention strategies and patient education.

It is not just “fixing pain”, it’s structured, progressive, and performance-focused.

Following injury assessment and diagnosis, a needs analysis is conducted to understand the demands of your sport / goals and formulate a realistic plan for how we get from where you are now, to where you want to be. Whether that’s returning to the sport you love, or simply to perform daily activities with ease!

Sports Rehabilitators’ don’t just look at the injury itself, we adopt a global approach by performing movement analysis / posture examination to understand which factors may contribute to increased injury risk / performance inhibition.

Utilising a wide variety of treatment modalities & the implementation of progressive loading to help achieve your short and long term goals, training safely in the presence of injury, and increasing tolerance to the demands of your sport / daily activities. Every person is different, and our personalised approach is tailored to your specific needs.

Sports Rehab isn’t just for the sporting population, it is for all people of different backgrounds, age and experience!

Our goal is simple, to maximise your potential, and help you achieve your goals with confidence!
