Why is it that men find it difficult to go for psychotherapy?

Despite growing awareness about mental health, many men still hesitate to seek help. In the UK, men are significantly less likely than women to access psychological therapies—according to NHS data, only around 36% of referrals to talking therapies are for men.

Yet men are three times more likely to die by su***de than women.

What holds so many men back from reaching out?

One factor is gender socialisation. From a young age, many boys are taught—implicitly or explicitly—that expressing vulnerability is a weakness. “Man up,” “don’t cry,” “keep it together”—these messages can become deeply internalised. As adults, this often translates into emotional suppression, isolation, or coping through distraction rather than reflection.

These boys go onto becoming men who feel the pressure to appear “in control” at all times; and they find it difficult to even name what they’re feeling—let alone talk about it.

But therapy isn’t about falling apart. It’s about making space for your internal experience—something many men have never been taught is allowed, let alone encouraged.

If this resonates with you—or with someone you care about—and you think it might help to speak with someone confidentially, feel free to get in touch via https://groverpsychotherapy.uk

🔹 More people than ever are turning to — and it’s making a difference.

According to the latest BACP Public Perceptions Survey:
- 35% of UK adults have worked with a counsellor or psychotherapist

- 73% found it helpful

- 75% would recommend it to someone else

These numbers don’t just reflect statistics — they reflect a cultural shift.

More people are recognising that therapy is not a last resort — it’s a valuable act of self-care and investment in oneself.

Whether you're a senior professional, public figure, or simply someone who feels like they “should be coping,” but isn't — know that it's okay to seek support.

As a registered psychotherapist, I work with clients who want a confidential, reflective space to explore:

✔️ Burnout

✔️ Anxiety

✔️ Trauma

✔️ Identity and relationships

✔️ Or simply a quiet feeling that something needs to change

High-achieving, but feeling overwhelmed? You're not alone.

You lead, you solve problems, you hold it together — at work, at home, in every room you walk into.

But behind the calm, capable exterior, do you find yourself:

Lying awake at night, unable to switch off?

Feeling irritable or emotionally flat with loved ones?

Struggling to ask for help because “you should be able to cope”?

I work with in high-responsibility roles who are experiencing burnout, anxiety, trauma responses, or just a quiet sense that something isn’t right.

You don’t need to reach breaking point to ask for support.

My practice offers a confidential, respectful space to help you:
✅ Process stress or trauma without judgment
✅ Reconnect with yourself beyond the job title
✅ Make meaningful change in how you feel and function

🔒 Discreet. . Trauma-informed.

How can psychotherapy with me help you if you work in the sector? I believe that the human mind does not exist in isolation, and that it is shaped, influenced and impacted by groups of people - the groups we live in, i.e. family, the groups we have lived with, and the groups we spend time with such as work.

My work in psychotherapy is to understand you as a whole person with the full spectrum of your experience, and how that continues to impact you in the present day.

I have a few slots available for clients in the corporate sector, offering confidential space to talk openly about what might be bothering you.

Did you know that quite a few health insurance policies, such as BUPA, these days come with a Mental Health Cover?

What this means for you is that if you have a health insurance policy via your workplace, or privately, and are in need of psychotherapy, and are feeling the financial pressure, you might not need to carry the full cost on your own.

It’s worth checking with your provider to see if your policy includes mental health support—many do, and they often cover sessions with accredited psychotherapists.

We all have a longing to be embraced by something larger than our lifetimes. Even when one becomes a parent, the need to be supported and held only feels more alive. For some people, it is their parents or families that fulfil this need. For others, it can be religion, spirituality or nature that one feels held, nurtured or supported by. There are, however, people for whom nothing quite heals the lifelong wound of never having felt someone's love.

Being held in someone's mind, being remembered, being thought of, for someone to be fond of us, and for someone to do acts of kindness and generosity towards us: this is what makes us feel fully alive in this world - and in this lifetime. How can help you if you haven't felt this way?

Smartphones, apps and have changed how we experience time, relationships and life. Technology puts us in a powerful position by telling us that we have everything on our fingertips, that we are the protagonist in getting what we want and creating the life we need.

But only if creating the life that we need, experiencing mutually fulfilling and understanding the essence of time - in its silence and in its rush - was as simple an affair as an app on one's fingertips. Boredom, nothingness and reflectiveness are resented in our time, and we have too many a solution to fix this.

From this premise, people often come to therapy wanting an immediate fix for their despair or unhappiness, but psychotherapy seeks to look at the deeper problem, before a way out can be discovered. From one perspective, the essence of psychotherapy is that 'it is not what it looks like'. What seems to be the unhappiness is only but a manifestation of something deeper.

is about two people coming together to attend to one of them, and to get to know what is missing, what was never there and what is left; and then to mutually discover how emotional repair can unfold.
