Semaglutide (Wegovy®) for heart disease – why it isn’t available locally
You may have seen reports that a medicine called semaglutide can reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes in some people.
While this treatment has been approved by NICE, that guidance applies mainly to England and Wales. In Scotland, medicines also have to be approved and funded locally before they can be prescribed.
At the moment:
NHS Scotland has not introduced a funded service to use semaglutide for heart disease prevention
NHS Fife does not currently offer this treatment for heart or stroke risk reduction
Because of this, GPs are unable to prescribe it, even if it has been mentioned in the media
Semaglutide is still available in Scotland for certain diabetes treatments, but not for heart disease alone.
If this changes in the future, it would require:
national approval in Scotland
a specialist‑led service
local funding and capacity
Until then, the best way to reduce heart risk remains:
managing blood pressure and cholesterol
stopping smoking
healthy diet, weight management and physical activity
taking proven heart medications where appropriate
If you’d like to discuss your personal heart risk or what treatments are suitable for you now, we’re very happy to do that.
