Families in Trauma

Families in Trauma We WANT to fill the gaps where families need support, especially when trying to access mainstream support.

A lived experience, peer led organisation helping families through 1-1 support and group trainings around peer support in the community and workplace settings. Families in Trauma and Recovery is a hybrid digital service offering peer support, elearning, eCPR, podcasting, social media resources for families in trauma and recovery. This is one of the missing links in the chain of support which must be closed.

Whilst attending my event in Glasgow yesterday, I saw this and it made me smile - especially in relation to Peer practise. Because Peer support had always been viewed as as a poor relation to the medical "profession" and peers are often viewed as at the bottom of the pile 😉

When we received our last donation, it was £116 for that quarter. Now that might not sound like a lot to others, but for us these regular donations make a huge difference to us keeping our doors open and creating family support groups, 1-1 support and also training to help support our own mental health and those of our families. So please keep using the app, or think about having it on your phone - as it doesn't cost you a penny. We get a few pennies from any shop you use that participates - and that can even include shops like Asda, Morrisons, Tesco, Amazon and many others.

Shocking to think that we know more about how many labradors are registered than we do about children who have a parent who have been imprisoned. What impact does this have on families?? (Difficult viewing - be aware) Children Heard and Seen

This film demonstrates the importance of identification and support for children with a parent in prison. An estimated 312,000 children are affected by paren...

I think we all need afternoons like this. Just a wee break to recharge. Life might have changed drastically, but don't forget we all need some me-time. Its not selfish - it's absolutely vital fir self care. ❤️

It’s a soft, still moment in the heart of Notting Hill, circa 1958. In a quiet corner of a day nursery playground, rows of children lie peacefully under blankets, their small bodies curled in sleep atop camp beds or folded rugs. The air is warm enough for outdoor naps, with the scent of summer grass and distant traffic drifting gently on the breeze. A teacher, perhaps wearing a simple pinafore and sensible shoes, stands watch nearby, her posture relaxed but attentive. The playground—usually filled with shrieks and scampering feet—is transformed into a hush of rising and falling chests, with only the occasional murmur or twitch from dreaming minds.

Each child, dressed in wool jumpers or hand-me-down dungarees, carries the faint stamp of postwar Britain—families making do, mothers at work, nurseries providing care in a changing social landscape. Their sleep speaks of safety, of routine and tender structure. Toy prams rest beside benches, buckets lie overturned in the sandbox, and the faint chalk outlines of earlier games are still visible on the concrete. It's a moment that bridges the innocence of childhood with the quiet strength of the adults who held these small communities together. For these children, nap time in the playground isn’t just a pause—it’s a kind of trust in the world around them.

Seen today, a photo from that moment feels almost dreamlike. We marvel at the simplicity: children asleep in public view, unbothered by the open sky or the nearness of strangers. There’s something deeply moving about that trust, and about the care that made it possible. Notting Hill, before its fame and transformation, was a working-class area still healing from the war, still full of ordinary lives unfolding. This image—of tiny figures resting in the sun—is a gentle relic of a time when childhood was protected by the strength of community and the quiet rituals that gave it rhythm.

Our Story

Families in Trauma was set up initially due to my own family suffering a trauma we had no preparation for, and were totally shocked to find there was a lack of support or help for families. We decided this was an appalling situation as trauma needs immediate support and is so difficult to deal with. It was at this point we decided to use the skills we had already developed as video producers and combine it with something to help families in trauma.

We now interview families, who have gone through trauma and record their experiences which are then shared, with the family’s permission, via our website .. This can really help other families who have suffered similar situations - enabling them to hear from other families . This can help them to cope with feelings of isolation, loneliness and provide relief, belief, understanding and a shared sense of purpose and hope.

From these interviews we are creating online mental health support courses. These will be very unique because the information created in the course will be informed by “real” people who have suffered trauma. So ultimately they will be “peer support” programmes delivered online - so available to all and accessible at any time of the day or night.
