Being both Mum and Dad.

In the run up to Father's Day, we wanted to share WAY Widowed and Young member Steve's story. Thanks for sharing your story and this beautiful card with us, such gorgeous words 💙

"When we knew that Melissa was going to die, she and I had a conversation with the Children (19 & 17 at the time). We made a conscious decision that I had to change my parenting, I’d always been the firmer parent of the two of us and we both knew that had to change.

Even though I kind of knew how to run the house there were so many things that I didn’t know, and the first three months were tough working them all out. Perhaps the biggest challenge though was finding a new dynamic with our soon to be Adult children, I found that making sure we ate together was hugely beneficial, I sought out the little things that I knew Melissa did for them before she became ill and tried to make sure they still happened as best I could.

Learning to be both Mum and Dad is not easy but is possible, I leant on my sister and Melissa’s friends for a female perspective on household disagreements before I made decisions which proved a wise move again and again. It culminated in the children making me a comical Mother’s Day card which was such a great affirmation that I was at least making a difference to their loss."

We are sending love to all those who find Father's Day difficult. Please do reach out to other members who understand.
