🌏 Tai Chi & Acupuncture Top Tip #3
Sink the Smile to Centre – Calm the Mind & Stabilise the Body

In both Tai Chi and acupuncture, one of the most powerful practices you can do is the centre smile.

This is much more than a mental exercise - it’s a full-body energetic shift.

✨ Try this:
Bring a soft, inner smile to the centre of your head.

Let it sink down:

🧠 Relaxing the mind and thoughts
❀️ Softening the heart and internal organs
🦡 Passing through the centre of your thighs
πŸ‘£ Down through the soles of your feet
🌏 And deep into the earth

This activates the median nerve, which is linked to the Liver system (Wood element) - the realm of inner vision, direction, and dream-life.

But the movement itself is Earth - gathering rising energy downward, stabilising and centring the body.

πŸŒ€ Cue for practice:
"Body, breath, and mind are interacting as one."

Use this when you're feeling scattered, overthinking, or disconnected - it restores calm, focus, and a grounded sense of presence.

πŸ“Œ Next week’s Top Tip shows you how to root your energy twice your height for full-body stability and internal power.

Tai Chi & Acupuncture Top Tip #3

Smile Down the Centre to Find Your Root 🌿

Once the smile has opened the neck and eased the back, let it travel deeper β€” down through the centre of the body.
Allow the smile to melt through the throat, heart, abdomen, and pelvis, following the central channel all the way to the feet. This gentle descent gathers and settles your energy, creating a calm, grounded centre.

In Tai Chi and Qigong, this inner smile connects the Heart and Kidneys - Fire and Water - balancing warmth with stability, movement with stillness. It’s how we root both energy and awareness.

πŸ’§ Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

Grounding depends on flow. The fluids of the body - blood, lymph, and the moisture within the tissues support the same rooted stability as the fluid-filled discs of the spine. Keep them nourished so the body can support you from the ground up.

πŸ“Œ Next up: opening the chest and breathing from the centre of gravity.

Tai Chi & Acupuncture Top Tip #2

Release the Lower Back & Ease Sciatic Pain

🌿 A gentle smile doesn’t just unlock the neck - it also melts tension in the lower back.
As you soften the jaw and let the smile drop down through the spine, the lumbar region (Mingmen ε‘½ι–€, β€œGate of Life”) begins to expand. This relaxes the lumbar and sacral plexuses, sending warmth and energy down into the legs.

✨ By lightly tucking the tailbone and closing the pelvic floor, you help the spine lengthen and the lower back to release - easing pressure on the sciatic nerves and allowing energy to flow more freely through the hips and legs.

πŸ’§ Hydration is key here too. When the discs in your lower spine are well-hydrated, they cushion the vertebrae and relieve nerve pressure, helping both mobility and comfort.

πŸ“Œ Stay tuned: the next Top Tip will explore how to root your energy deeply into the ground for lasting stability.

Tai Chi & Acupuncture Top Tip #1

Smile to Unlock the Neck & Shoulders

😊 A gentle smile naturally draws the chin in, opening:

Great Hammer (DU-14) at the base of the neck
Palace of Wind (DU-16) at the base of the occiput

Together, they help release tension, lift your spirit, and open natural energy flow. Let that smile melt down the front of the body, chest, arms, belly, legs, into the feet. Often, shoulder pain is a sign we’re holding tension instead of smiling, which helps to open the joints in the neck and upper back.

πŸ’§ Remember to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! The discs in your spine are fluid-filled - when they’re well-hydrated, they cushion and support the joints. Without enough fluid, they compress, causing muscles to tighten and nerves to become irritated.

πŸ“Œ Stay tuned: the next Top Tip will be on how to release the low back to ease sciatic pain.
