Body Language Beyond the Lip Lick: Context, Contingencies & What Behaviour Really Tells Us Live Online Webinar: Sunday 8th ...

22/04/2025

Reactivity isn’t a diagnosis. It’s a label.

If you’ve been told your dog is “reactive,” that’s not the full picture. It just means a dog has big, unwanted responses to things—like barking, lunging, spinning, freezing, or growling. But it doesn’t tell you why the dog is doing it.

And without understanding why, it’s easy to get stuck.

In herding breeds, the “why” often ties back to what these dogs were bred to do: notice and control movement. When that’s mixed with frustration, fear, or a lack of coping skills, we get the behaviours people call “reactivity.”

Some common patterns in herding breeds:

-Fixating on movement like dogs, people, or vehicles
-Struggling to disengage once they’re locked in
-Escalating quickly
-Feeling unsure or unsafe with unfamiliar people or dogs
-Difficulty recovering after a reaction
-Hard to find a suitable distance from a trigger

A dog spinning or lunging on leash isn’t trying to give you a hard time. They’re having a hard time. And herding breeds often get labelled “reactive” without much thought to how or why that behaviour developed.

In this webinar, I go into:

-What reactivity really is (and isn’t)
-How herding dog behaviour and breeding history shape what we see
-How to start helping, even if your dog’s behaviour feels out of control

Whether you’re living with a dog who’s already struggling or you’re hoping to prevent problems in a younger dog, this webinar will give you the foundation you need.

THE WEBINAR WILL BE RECORDED FOR THOSE UNABLE TO ATTEND LIVE!

Join me on Thursday, May 1st at 10:00am Pacific.

The webinar is 1 hour long and followed by a Q&A.

What I do

Welcome to the wellbeing zone for those who woof and whinny! I am a consultant for Herbal Choices therapy, based on the principles of applied zoopharmacognosy, bringing the wild pharmacy into your living room to help your pet to heal itself.

Wild animals are able to forage for plants and minerals to maintain their health, but domestic animals are rarely given the opportunity to use this natural ability. Herbal Choices can complement veterinary care by teaching you, the owner, how to support your animal’s wellbeing using natural remedies, and build on the special bond you have with your four-legged friend.

I have worked extensively with a variety of dogs for the past four years. I have studied dog training and behaviour and I keep up to date with the latest science in canine health and behaviour. Having ridden as a ‘horse-mad’ child until adulthood, I’ve deepened my understanding of equine behaviour and wellbeing by attending workshops with Sue Gardner of Applied Equine Behaviour.

I am also an agent for PERFECT FIT walking harnesses. I believe harnesses offer the safest and most comfortable way to exercise your dog. I can help you choose the best fitting harness for your dog, just get in touch.
