Many people use acupuncture for specific problems, some use it because, though they feel unwell, they have no obvious diagnosis. An interesting read.

One of my takes on treating Mental Health with Five Element Acupuncture is the number of acupuncture points available. Everyone is unique and has a personal experience of mental health - we are able to adapt each and every treatment to reflect that.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and we want to talk about how much BAcC practitioners can help those in our communities struggling with mental health issues.

Traditional acupuncture and Chinese Medicine is a holistic discipline, and treats the whole person rather than the ‘disease’. The aetiology for depression, anxiety, and stress can be complex and varied from person to person.

In this fascinating members-only article from the recent edition of Acu Magazine, Peter Mole, Dean Emeritus of the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine, explains his integrated approach to treating anxiety combining the wisdom of Five Element theory and TCM protocols.

How I became an Acupuncturist

I discovered acupuncture for fertility as I was struggling to get pregnant (it worked!) and then found that other niggling health issues such as insomnia, and a grouchy digestive system improved. Moreover, I had a renewed zest for life. Wow! I was so impressed, I decided to retrain, to help others benefit from such a simple yet effective form of medicine.

How does it work?

Classical Five-Element Acupuncture was developed by the Chinese over 2000 years ago. By identifying and treating the root cause of disease, the patient is returned to health in body, mind and spirit. An Acupuncturist will insert needles at specific points on the body to influence the flow of energy (or qi - pronounced chee). When energy flows well round the body, we feel well. When it doesn’t - problems start to occur, either physically, mentally or emotionally. My job is to work out the root cause of the problem, choose the best points for the patient to, insert the needles... and watch as people’s energy returns to balance and they return to health.

As it’s a holistic medicine, Acupuncture treats the whole person, both for physical ailments and mental and emotional issues at the same time (because there’s often a link)
