At our last Yurtside circle we created a spring time flower mandala . We respectfully harvested some local wild flowers and a someone contributed a gifted bouquet.

Creating a mandala like this, with others , is a way to come together and make creative choices , in a way that attunes to each other and each natural object, as we ask : Where does this flower wish to be placed?

Mandalas can help us feel more calm and centred , due to their symmetry and balance, but my perspective is that it is also OK to depart from any fixed form. To ‘trust what may emerge’ is a classic comment by an art therapist, but I truely believe it! That something valuable and meaningful can occur when we invite these more permissive spaces.

Our next Yurtside circle is on Tuesday 17th June.

I will also be sharing some natural Mandala practices at our next community morning for parents on Saturday 21st June.

See link tree for more info about both these sessions.

Today, in my therapy room, we practiced some mindful meditation. Enabling both to pause and slow down during a busy day. Together, we appreciated the hushed rustling of poplar trees, blowing in the breeze outside. In these summer months, a time to appreciate the rich greenery outside.

This was a stunning evening in the yurt a few months ago. There was a pristinely clear night sky , and we could see an incredible number of stars.

There are a few spaces to join our circle to celebrate spring next Tuesday 20th May. See link in Bio.

I am delighted to be offering my next three day ‘Introduction to art therapy’ course (online) in June.

You can book this directly with Universiity of Hertfordshire - see Link in profile.

Our first day focuses on the theme of ‘new growth’.

Some positive feedback from our current course is that students have been glad to find a ‘reputable’ online course and appreciate the experiential learning opportunities.

This course is to inform and inspire you, The next steps to be come a qualified art therapist that are then suggested , would be attending a foundation course and then a MA (or equivalent qualification).

Today in a workshop we have focused on appreciation practices and ‘opening to Joy’.

It is so easy to focus on what is going wrong. Today, instead, how about: ‘focus on a crocus’.

It is interesting to play with the idea of expanding our vision, as we walk or meander in outdoor walking mindfulness.

Rather than being tunnel visioned and either being too focused on our destination, or getting entirely lost in throught, we can expand to take in glimpses of nature around us.

I am lucky in my semi-rural therapy location that we can practice in this way just outside the therapy room.

Today I am thinking about transitions into the therapy space, from the journey there, to the moment of arrival. Today, this took place in a meaningful way, at the time of evening sunset.

Just a simple mindfulness practice about letting in sights and sounds of early spring. Inviting delight even on tougher days. Today this was possible on a cold rainy February mornings, through a spontaneous visit to a garden centre. There are signs of spring emerging 🌱

I am very much looking forward to our first Yurtside circle of 2025. For those of you local to Lewes - there are a couple of spaces to join us tomorrow evening.

We are an equal, co-created sharing circle. We meet monthly at a Yurt in Iford, near Lewes. Each circle eve includes a fire, short meditations, connecting with nature and creativity

See our link in our bio here to find out more. This week we will be collaging and making vision boards for the year ahead, with inspiration from the natural cycles of trees.

It’s been lovely being so close to the South Downs with this snow. It’s felt like a winter wonderland for a few days! But also my art therapy space feels nice and cosy today.

A reminder that my next workshops are now online for 2025.

I am continuing to offer an online introduction to art therapy course through the University of Hertfordshire. It’s 3 day duration. The next course starts on Tuesday 4th February and there are a few places still to join us. It’s a great start for learning more about art therapy and if you’re considering training as an art therapist.

I was on local radio (BBC Sussex) this morning for 5 mins talking about art therapy and mindfulness , at 02:49:00 mins into the show (recording here).

I spoke about my passion of combining art therapy and mindfulness together. I described how, in my early childhood, I loved drawing and making things out of boxes and sellotape. That young children may be more able to focus on their process , rather than outcome, which is also what we as art therapists emphasise. That we try and create a welcoming and accepting space.

I described coming back to art making in my early twenties during a challenging time, at the same time as discovering the benefits of mindfulness, completing my MA in Art Psychotherapy at Goldsmiths University, then collaborating with others to develop art therapy and mindfulness sessions.
