These are my favourite visual aids from Dr. David Unwin. They explain quite graphically how the foods that we eat are transformed into glucose (sugar) as soon as we eat them. For many people it is difficult to comprehend how a savoury dish can turn into so much sugar. These can be saved and printed out to be stuck on your bread bin or fridge as a reminder. The fight against diabetes can be difficult but knowledge is a powerful weapon.πŸ™‚ I recently posted this in my new Facebook group - Reversing Diabetes in Lewes.

Back onto the subject of weight loss drugs again. This story comes from The Express last week. Dr. Unwin is explaining that there is a cheaper, and safer, alternative to weight loss drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic. He is correct in stating that low carb diets are successful at helping his patients lose weight. The only problem is that it takes a little bit of effort for people to learn what you can and can't eat on a low carb diet. For six months I have been sharing this knowledge with our Type 2 Diabetes Support Group and I have to say that quite a few of our attendees have lost some weight, reduced their blood glucose levels and say that they no longer feel addicted to carbs. Dr. Unwin currently has 150 patients that have put their Diabetes into remission. I am hoping to be able to report similar successes when our attendees next get their HbA1c tested. With Xmas arriving shortly we will all be tempted to eat more than we would normally eat. Some of that food might be cakes, biscuits and sweets. We know that this is not what our body needs or wants but sometimes it just tastes too good to stop. This is a difficult time of year to be Diabetic as these foods raise blood glucose levels much quicker than real foods would. Doctors would recommend you take more Metformin or inject more insulin but the real solution is to just eat real food. At this time of year it is not difficult to find meat or fish that can be served with a selection of vegetables but instead we choose the sweet options because they are convenient and they are also addictive. I found this series of videos from Public Health Collaboration very helpful and I hope that some of you will too. Have a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. πŸ™‚

There is no perfect diet for every human on this planet. We are all unique and so we all need personalized advice. Having said that there are many generalizations that can be applied to most people without causing problems. This article from Dr. Jockers lists those generalizations and explains why they are recommended for most. I've never seen so much detailed advice on one web page before. Even if you only read the first few paragraphs and applied the advice I'm sure you could improve your health. Perhaps you could add it to your bookmarks and read a section every week. I don't expect anyone will read all of it in one sitting. If you have any questions or if something has been left out you know how to contact me. Here is a Youtube video featuring Jeremy Clarkson. He talks about his latest health scare where he honestly thought he was having a heart attack. He wasn't, but the NHS took the opportunity to give him a load of Nutritional advice that goes totally against what a proper Nutritional Therapist would advise. The gentleman offering his opinions on what Jeremy says is right to criticize the advice he intends to follow. Jeremy is a farmer that breeds top quality organic sheep, pigs and cows. He now believes that it is dangerous to his health to eat his own produce. Worse than that is the fact that he now thinks egg yolks are bad for him too. We need to make sure that everyone understands that the food that is likely to shorten our healthy lives is the food which has been invented and produced in factories over the last 50 years, not the food that we have been eating for 300,000 years. This video highlights a problem that I have been talking about for several years. Doctors just don't get taught about the value of good nutrition in the fight against disease, especially chronic disease. I am currently giving nutritional advice at our local Type 2 Diabetes Support Group in Lewes. Most of our attendees tell me that their Doctors have never discussed the importance of Nutrition in the care of T2 Diabetes. They just don't seem to realise that there's an alternative to prescribing medication to lower blood glucose. Contact me if this is something you'd like to know more about.

Here's an article from Green Med Info that I have to share with you. My daily breakfast is live yoghurt with blueberries and a sliced banana for energy. That can keep me going for hours and it hardly raises my blood glucose level so I don't experience a crash around 11am. If you start the day with a breakfast of simple carbohydrates, like cereal or toast and marmalade, you will raise your blood glucose rapidly which causes your pancreas to release a lot of insulin. When all of the glucose has been cleared from your blood there is probably a bit of insulin left over and so your blood glucose falls to dangerously low levels. This is the crash that can only be defeated by adding more glucose, so you snack. Blood glucose goes up rapidly again and the cycle continues. This is the daily roller-coaster that many people need to get off. Yoghurt for breakfast is my preferred solution. There are other options too if you are lactose-intolerant. Crohn's and Colitis are difficult diseases to explain but this post goes a long way to doing just that. To cut a long story short it appears that inflammatory foods eventually cause the tight junctions in your intestines to become less tight and that allows larger proteins to get through into your bloodstream and to circulate around the body. This is sometimes called 'Leaky gut'. These 'invaders' are then targeted by the immune system which can lead to autoimmune diseases. The proposed solution in this post is to start with a cleaner diet with less inflammatory foods. Processed foods are among the worst of these foods and ultra-processed foods just go one step further. It may sound like hard work avoiding some of the foods on her list but the reward is priceless. πŸ™‚

Another honest celebrity speaks his mind about 'fake meat'. A vegetarian diet has been a 'relatively healthy' option for decades when comparing it with the Standard American Diet (SAD). The relatively recent invention of vegetable-based meat-alternatives has allowed many more meat lovers to switch to vegetarianism and not feel like they're missing out. The truth is that vegan junk food is no better than meaty junk food. Martin has made the return to real meat for health reasons which is very sensible. A diet of real meat combined with organic vegetables is a recipe for a long healthy life. Processed foods offer convenience but at the cost of your health. This is sustainable for a few years but the inflammation caused by added sugars, salts and vegetable oils will ensure many hours in your Doctor's waiting room in the future. Keep it real and healthy. πŸ™‚
