Valentine Voice Care

Valentine Voice Care A multidisciplinary centre dedicated to the care & support of professional voice users.

Kate Valentine specialises in vocal massage, laryngeal manual therapy, vocal health, and injury prevention. A passionate ambassador for vocal health, it is her mission to help remove the mystery and stigma surrounding vocal wellbeing and injury, and to provide a safe space for clients to help them with their journey – whichever part of that journey they are on. Whilst enjoying a successful career as a principal artist on the international operatic stage she sustained a vocal injury: a career-defining moment which sparked a fascination with vocal health, rehabilitation, and the long-term benefits of manual therapy for voice. She qualified as Sports Massage therapist before studying VoiceRelease Massage© with Luise Breyer-Aiton in Switzerland, and Vocal Massage, Manuel Therapy and Laryngeal Manipulation with Stephen King at the renowned Voice Care Centre in London. As well as running her own practice ‘Valentine Voice Care’ in Lewes, East Sussex and managing a busy client list including English National Opera, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Scottish Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, and The Dunedin Consort, Kate also works in two multidisciplinary teams: the Voice Care Centre (London) and Clyde Consulting Rooms (Glasgow)

🎤 Hydrate Your Voice Like a Pro 🎤

Your vocal cords work hard—give them the hydration they deserve!

🥛 Skimmed Milk = Longer-lasting hydration
Research from St Andrews University shows milk’s sodium helps your body retain fluids longer than plain water.

🥥 Coconut Water = Electrolyte-rich refreshment
Naturally packed with minerals and electrolytes, coconut water helps replenish and retain hydration—perfect for keeping your voice smooth and strong.

Both drinks contain small amounts of carbs, proteins, or fats that slow fluid absorption, helping your body stay hydrated longer.

Whether you're a singer, speaker, teacher, or just love a good chat—your voice will thank you.

🎤 Ever felt hoarse after shouting over music at a party or struggling to be heard outdoors? It’s not just the noise—quiet rooms, echo, tinnitus, distractions, and even changes with our hearing can all impact how we use our voices.

Your voice works hard, often without you noticing. That’s why we look at your vocal health means through a biopsychosocial lens: looking at the *whole picture*. It's not just about the sound you make, but what else might be compromising it?

Voice care is complex—and you deserve support that listens to every part of you, and your life.

Did you know your menstrual cycle can impact your voice? Whether you're a singer, speaker, or just love belting tunes in the shower, your hormones are playing backup vocals all month long.

✨ **Menstruation (Days 1–5)**
Low energy, vocal fatigue, and dry throat. Estrogen dips can cause swelling in the vocal folds—hello, raspy vibes.

🌱 **Follicular Phase (Days 6–14)**
Estrogen rises = hydrated, flexible vocal folds. A great time to try challenging repertoire and enjoy those high notes!

🌟 **Ovulation (Days 14–16)**
Peak estrogen brings power, agility, and resonance. But your vocal folds are extra sensitive—don’t overdo it!

🌙 **Luteal Phase (Days 17–28)**
Progesterone climbs, causing fluid retention and swelling. Expect reduced range and more vocal fatigue.

💌 Your voice deserves love too. Track your cycle, listen to your body, and give your vocal folds the TLC they need.

Thankyou David! ☺️

🧠💤 **Sleep = Learning Superpower**

Think sleep is just a break from studying? Think again. Rest and recovery are *active* parts of the learning process.

📉 According to The Sleep Foundation, lack of sleep can slash your learning ability by up to **40%**.

📚 Without effort to retain info, we forget:
- ~50% of new info within **1 day**
- ~90% within **1 week**

This is the infamous **Forgetting Curve**, first mapped by psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus and backed by modern research.

🧪 Harvard’s Dr. Edward Pace-Schott confirms: sleep helps consolidate memories, strengthen neural connections, and boost recall.

So if you're cramming all night... you might be forgetting more than you're learning. 😴

🎶 **Cross-Train Your Voice Like an Athlete!** 🏋️‍♀️🎤

Cross-training isn’t just for runners and gym buffs—**singers** can level up too! 💪 Whether you're a classical vocalist or a pop powerhouse, exploring different genres and techniques builds a **flexible, resilient, and expressive voice**.

✨ Why cross-train?
- Boosts vocal health & longevity
- Strengthens your primary style (hello, Puccini!)
- Aids recovery & prevents overuse
- Enhances technique
- Expands artistic freedom & career options

🎭 **How to start?**
Play! Mix up your repertoire.
- Add some belt to your warm-up
- Switch between coloratura & legato
- Explore breathy vs. glottal onsets
- Dive into chest voice if you're usually floating up high

🧘‍♀️ Movement = medicine!
Try:
- Drawing the alphabet with your nose (yes, really!)
- Shaking your fists to free the larynx
- Raising arms to open the ribs
- Hip figure-eights on a Swiss ball to loosen your core

🎓 Work with a voice coach to explore safely and creatively.
🎉 Most importantly—**have fun and trust the process!**
