Do you wear your shoulders around your ears? Shoulders become protracted (rounded) due to low mood which can for some, be brought on by the change in season and light.

Conversely, the same shape can be caused by poor posture due the lengthy periods of sitting hunched over.

This posture reduces our capacity to fill the lungs. It also communicates a negative message to the nervous system; that we are stressed regardless of our reality.

Through poses and stretches, using props and breath, we can open the body up to increase greater lung capacity, elongate the exhalation and in so doing, induce a sense of calm and relaxation that affirms a positive message to the nervous system.

This will be our intention this Slow Sunday as we cultivate Spaciousness that benefits both mind and body.

Just a couple of spaces left - 9.30-11.00.

Spaciousness is something we lack at times of high stress. We can stress the body with too much training, creating physical tension. And when life is busy, we have very little 'head' space.

In our next Slow Sunday on 9th November, we will use tools that help us to rediscover that much needed sense of space as we head towards the festive season.

Email anneliese@birchwoodyoga.co.uk to book.

Max 5 spaces.

It's never too late to start Yoga. You are not too stiff, too heavy or too weak to begin. It helps to be able to get up and down from the ground but by recruiting props and developing slowly, with plenty of repetition over 8 weeks, you will learn to listen to your body.

Over a further 8 weeks, you will practice mindfulness and cultivate respect for yourself. You will learn to honour the mind and body you have received and to take practices from your mat, into daily life.

You will be part of a small, intimate group of 5 women at midlife and beyond. Classes are in a comfortable, domestic setting in Barcombe, near Lewes.

Start with a friend or alone and develop something worthwhile that will see you into the future with a positive attitude, a flexible body and mind.

With a background in Scaravelli inspired Hatha Yoga combined with Yoga Therapy for the Mind, you will be in safe hands.

Starts Wednesday 7th January 9.30-10.45 or privately at a time that suits us both.

I have this image on my phone, so when I came across it yesterday, I couldn't believe how apt it was. My post menopausal body prevents me from sitting this way. My knees have become stiff and I have gluteal tendinopathy. So I absolutely have to befriend myself on a daily basis.

It's so important that we practice acceptance. We can do our best to stay fit and healthy, but genetics and the loss of oestrogen might have surprises in store that are out of our control.

Whilst I do everything I can to mobilise my joints and strengthen my glutes, there just aren't enough hours in the day to make the change I would really like. So each morning, I check in and accept that today might not be the day that I dig up plants or go for a long walk!

Slowing down happens!

Fridays always used to be my busiest class - oversubscribed with committed and passionate students. Life got in the way for some. People moved, jobs changed and now space is available for you! It's a lovely class. People turn up early to chat and have a giggle. Sometimes we enjoy a coffee in the kitchen afterwards. And students leave feeling contended and peaceful. Email me to give it a try. Only 5 students per class.

The Calming Breath is the first theme to my De-Stress Your Midlife course and will be the same for Slow Sunday on 14th September 9.30-11.00.

When we're stressed, the nervous system gets the message primarily to run or fight. In this state, the breath moves into the chest as oxygen is pumped to the muscles for action and the breath becomes fast but shallow.

If stress in chronic, we can get stuck in this pattern meant for short term survival.

Practices are used in Yoga Therapy to release tension, soothe the nervous system and restore calm so that we can breathe into the belly once again using the diaphragm rather than accessory muscles.

Women at midlife are frequently carers for ageing parents and children while holding down a job and being the main housekeeper in the family.

Time is not on our side and the one thing that slips all too often is self care.

I'm thrilled to announce the opportunity to benefit from the themes of the De-Stress Your Midlife course without the commitment.

Slow Sundays are an extended monthly lesson that will run through the themes of the course and weekly lessons will follow each theme. There will be a variety of practices taught that support your mental and physical wellbeing.

The first Slow Sundays themed The Calming Breath is on 14th September 9.30-11.00 a.m and it's not too late to join the latest 8 week block of weekly lessons. You can also drop in.

Slow Sundays and classes are suitable for complete beginners and would offer you a thorough initiation into the practices of Yoga and mindfulness.

Hello, I'm Anneliese. I prefer to be identified not by my job, but by my personality. I am kind, compassionate, considerate and honest. I have a good sense of humour. I can be known to have verbal diarrhoea but I am also quite shy! I am happy in my own company but enjoy one to one or small group interactions. I am curious about the world around us, particularly the flora and fauna. I love gardening and cooking - I grow my own vegetables and always cook from scratch. I love making potions and teas from dried herbs/flowers. I enjoy singing, dancing, visiting exhibitions of all kinds. I volunteer for In a previous life, or maybe my next one, was a dancer!
