Winter time foods and the 3 tastes to favour at this time of year...

❤️ Sweet is present in foods like rice, milk, dates, maple syrup, jaggery. The qualities are oily, cooling, and heavy and a sweet taste increases the vital energy and is wholesome in moderation to all the tissues (seven dhatus – plasma, blood, muscles, fat, bone, marrow and nerve tissue and reproductive tissues) it makes us feel good and promotes stability but in excess it can cause disorder and imbalance causing colds, congestion, heaviness, diabetes, laziness, and obesity.

❤️ Sour is found in vinegar, cheeses, lemon, green grapes, fermented foods, citrus fruits, sour cream. They are substances that are liquid, light, heating and oily in nature and like sweet, when in moderation they are positively refreshing, taste delicious, stimulate appetite, and energize the body. If used in excess they cause thirst, hyperacidity, acid indigestion and can aggravate or bring on skin conditions like dermatitis, acne, eczema, and psoriasis.

❤️ Salty holds moisture in the body, improves digestion, lubricates & helps clear obstructions of digestive areas but in large amounts could cause swelling or a water imbalance. Salty include seaweed, marmite, miso, tamari, miso broth & salts (try Cornish Sea salt, rock salt, pink Himalayan, and kala namak rather than table salt which can be quite treated and drying)

❤️ These are all calming for the nervous system in this season and staying away from cold, raw foods/salads, that are too cooling in winter, and upping servings of veggies – especially greens and root vegetables that are grounding because they grow in the ground – along with squashes, pumpkins and marrows that grow near to the ground, all foods that nourish and centre, while also having a good water content.

These have changed a little - to now start with gentle restorative yoga soft movement & breath-work to then move into deepening meditations or yoga Nidra depending on the season ❤️

Closing with a seasonal tea & sweet treat to slowly come round & notice gently how you feel. Deeply relaxing & restful.

Keep toasty...

Hot Winter Toddy 🧡🍊
Sliced fresh ginger
Couple of cloves
Pinch cinnamon
Squeezed orange & slice of zest
Squeezed lemon
Topped up with hot water
Stirred in a tsp of honey with turmeric.

Have enjoyed this throughout the day today to help keep the body hydrated, to stay warm & not shock the system with cold water drinks. Clearing at this time of year, caffeine free & warding off of ailments. Keep the pe**er up.

Yoga this week with me

Off we go nice and slow. This was yesterday a beautiful scenic walk with all the birds still enjoying the ice free parts of the water & calling to each other as they moved slowly through. Fresh air first thing & lots of birdy footprints on the ground.

Back to work week for most after a hopefully restful time - we will move with Winter in mind, warming up the body, noticing how we feel, breathing to find depth but equally finding space in a sense of resting poses too. Moving with the seasonal cycles. Enjoying our practice however that feels.

Half Day Yoga retreat & Ayurvedic inspired seasonal lunch ❤️

Very excited to bring this next session in for 2026

We meet at a time on the cusp - still in the wintry feels but with those buds of movement towards the Spring. Time to bring in more movement to the body whilst also honouring the time to rest & restore.
A day to practice in depth with healthy movement, breath, meditation with sweet treats, seasonal teas, and a delicious vegetarian wholesome lunch.

10 am Meet & settle - make ourselves comfortable
10.15 gentle flow practice to bring in some energy.
11.45 seasonal tea & sweet treat. Time to be still & journal, take time out or chat & be social.
12.15 restorative yoga with theme around benefits of seasonal living.
1.15 Vegetarian light lunch of Soup & other goodies.
2.15 Meditation or yoga Nidra practice to close.

This is a light outline of our day which may vary a little.

Trying not to have favourites in the balms & sure I say this each season but this one is such a therapeutic trooper - full of some amazing goodies.

Eucalyptus, scotch fir, cedar-wood with juniper give strength to muscles, reduce aches, St John wort aids the nerves. Sweet orange for a lift, bergamot to ease with clary sage balancing plus the magic of cloves, litsea & peppermint. A strong team. Perfect on the chest if colds or phlegm, use all over the body if feeling dry and a lovely foot rub whilst sitting on the sofa. Bound together with bases of cocoa butter, shea & coconut plus local beeswax grated in to bind.
