The Quiet Power of Kindness

In a world that often moves too fast, kindness can feel like a quiet revolution.

Kindness isn’t just something we extend to others, it’s something we must also learn to offer ourselves. For many, especially those who experienced a harsh or critical upbringing, this can be a lifelong journey. Counselling offers a safe, compassionate space to gently unlearn the internal messages that told us we weren’t enough. With the right support, we can begin to meet ourselves with warmth, forgiveness, and care.

Self-kindness is the root of all wellbeing. It might look like setting boundaries, resting when we need to, nourishing our bodies with good food, or seeking support when life feels overwhelming.

And when we treat ourselves with compassion, it becomes easier to extend that same compassion outward. Kindness to others becomes a way of being in the world. It softens our relationships, helps us build stronger communities, and creates ripples far beyond what we can see.

At the Open Door, we see health as deeply interconnected. Just as we tend to ourselves and each other, so too must we care for the planet. Kindness to the earth means living with awareness: respecting its rhythms, using its resources mindfully, and honouring our place within the natural world.

In an Over-Connected World, Are We Truly Connected?

In a time when we’re more connected than ever through technology, many of us are feeling more isolated. Whether it’s isolation from others, from nature, or from our true selves, it’s clear that something is missing.

Person-Centred Therapy is grounded in the power of authentic connection. It reminds us that the most profound healing happens when we truly connect—with ourselves, with others, and with the world around us.

The Person-Centred Approach is all about creating a space where clients feel heard, valued, and understood, helping them rediscover their own inner resources and re-establish meaningful connections in their lives.

In a world that often feels fragmented, let’s reconnect with the value of true, compassionate connection.

Understanding Anxiety & How Counselling Can Help

Anxiety can feel overwhelming, isolating, and sometimes even paralyzing. Whether it’s constant worry, racing thoughts, or physical symptoms like a racing heart, it’s important to remember you’re not alone.

Counselling is a safe space to explore these feelings, uncover their root causes, and gain tools to manage them. Through talking, reflection, and guided exercises, a trained therapist can help you better understand your anxiety, build coping strategies, and work towards a more balanced mental space.

We have professional, experienced counsellors and psychotherapists working at the clinic, many of whom are listed on our website: https://www.theopendoorlewes.com/therapies.

Taking that first step towards seeking help is the beginning of positive change. You deserve the support and care that can help you thrive.

Person-Centred counselling/psychotherapy isn't just a method—it’s a revolution in how we understand and support human growth.

In the 1940s and 50s, Dr. Carl Rogers and his team took a radical approach: audio-recording therapy sessions to uncover what truly worked for clients. From this pioneering research emerged a comprehensive theory of trust in humanity's innate ability to thrive, known as the actualising tendency.

Unlike traditional methods, Person-Centred Therapy shifted the focus away from the therapist as the "expert." Instead, it built on six core conditions that create a safe and empowering environment for transformation:

Psychological contact between client and therapist.

The client's state of vulnerability or anxiety.

The therapist's authenticity (congruence).

Unconditional positive regard.

Empathic understanding.

Communication of empathy and regard, as perceived by the client.

Beyond Therapy

These principles don’t just apply to therapy—they’ve inspired better practices in teaching, management, childcare, and more. Wherever relationships thrive, the person-centred approach has something to offer.

Proven Through Research

With decades of validation (Cooper, Watson & Hölldampf, 2010; Elliott et al, 2013; Murphy & Joseph, 2016), the approach continues to evolve through the contributions of influential practitioners like Margaret Warner, Gary Prouty, and Kirshen Rundle.
