WHATS HAPPENED HERE?

A 64yr of, aesthenic, post-menapausal female falls heavily - you find her on the ground - she's been there several hours - her right hip is beginning to be painful - she can't straighten her leg - it's bent up, & turned out, with a drawing/tight feeling up the inside of the thigh to the groin.

DO NOT TRY TO HELP HER UP - make her comfortable without moving her. Ideally the paramedics should deal with this.

These are the classic signs of a # neck of the femur. It needs X raying, & will need pinning operatively, or, possibly replacing, depending on the pre- existing state of the hip joint.

After the first six weeks post op - Osteopathy can help the rehabilitation process to -

* Release the shortening through the muscles on the inside of the thigh (the adductors)

* Release the raised activity in the buttock muscles, & down the outside of the thigh (the gluteal muscles, & ilio-tibial band axis)

* Release the shock, & with-held tissue memory of the trauma within the bone, the fascia, the membranes, the hip joint capsule et al.

* Mobilise the stasis within the post inflammatory tissue fluids around the hip.

* Rebalance the ball in the socket, & the long axis of the femur.

* Take the with-held memory of the trauma out of the pelvis, & the Sacrum.

* And, to treat any secondary effects of the fall wherever in the body it may be manifesting, overtly, or covertly.

THE BEAUTY OF OSTEOPATHY IS THAT IT IS HOLISTIC

ALL THINGS HIP - PART TWO

LEGG - PERTHES DISEASE

A child of 4 - 8 you who is limping, & complaining of pain in the groin, hip, & sometimes the knee with stiffness, may well have a condition called Perthes Disease.

WHAT'S THAT?

A mis-shapen femoral head, caused by a reduced blood supply, resulting in a poor fit of the head of the hip in its socket. Worst case scenario - the femoral head can die which requires an operative procedure. This condition predisposes to the onset of arthritis in early adulthood.

Osteopathy can support this process.

BACK FACTS -

A hairy patch at the bottom of your back usually indicates the presence of Spina Bifida Occulta - a minor congenital defect, where the bone at the back of the vertebra - the neural arch, is partially absent. More often than not patients are totally unaware of having this, until an MRI or X-Rays are taken for some other reason.....or, an Osteopath points it out! These minor abnormalities are asymptomatic, & nothing to worry about.

However, Spina Bifida Occulta, & other congenital defects are often found together, for example - part of the 5th Lumbar vertebra can be fused to the Sacrum (partial Sacralisation) OR, part, or all of the 1st Sacral segment is not fused to the Sacrum, so effectively becomes a 6th Lumbar vertebra! (Lumbarisation)

Whilst Spina Bifida Occulta gives no symptoms, partial lumbarisation, or sacralisation, can give issues - low back pain & tenderness, sciatica, sacro-iliac irritation, an aggravation of symptoms on coughing, or straining on the loo, & stiffness of the Lumbars in the flexion range, due to what is known as "neural tethering."

Whilst Osteopathy cannot change the bony abnormalities, it CAN address the muscular, ligamentous, fascial, membranous, & neurological changes that play a part in the symptom expression.
