Recently we have been doing some restoration work for the memorial of Rev. Cooper of St. Michaels and All Angels church, Hamstall Ridware. This has been in preparation for a big anniversary to Celebrate the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen's Birth, Who Rev. Cooper was the cousin. The church are Holding a Garden party in association with the Jane Austen Society to commemorate this and we do hope you can be there. We have prepared a video of the work we undertook and you will see just what a difference it has made!

Below are a few words from the Church Warden:
St. Michael & All Angels church is the parish church for Hamstall Ridware a small village located approximately 8 miles to the north of Lichfield. Built of sandstone under a Tudor oak beam roof, the church is Grade 1 listed dating from c. 1120 however much of the present building was constructed in the 14th and 15th c. Much of its history is bound up with that of the local lords of the manor and it has associations with Jane Austen who in 1806 stayed in the Old Rectory with her cousin, the Rev’d Edward Cooper the local rector. It is thought her stay inspired aspects of her novels Mansfield Park as well as Sense and Sensibility where the description of Delaford mirrors scenes of Hamstall Ridware.

Last week we attended the dedication ceremony for the Arethusa memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum. It was our honour to create this memorial dedicated to all those who served on board the ship. The memorial is comprised of Sera grey granite and South African dark grey for the front panel.

A little history about the ship:
The Training Ship Arethusa, run by Shaftesbury Homes.
It all started in 1866, Lord Shaftesbury the 7th Earl, provided a supper for the homeless boys in London.
Lord Shaftesbury addressed the boys saying, "supposing that there were in the Thames a big ship large enough to contain a thousand boys, would you like to be placed onboard to be taught a trade or trained for the Navy and Merchant service?'. A forest of upraised hands settled these alternatives in the affirmative"
The first ship was to small, so in 1874 Lord Shaftesbury obtained another Ship.
HMS Arethusa built in 1849, the last ship to fire it’s guns in battle.
It was moored on the River Thames and renamed β€œArethusa” over 9000 boys where trained on this ship, in 1932, this ship started to rot and was not suitable to train boys any longer. Shaftesbury Homes bought another Ship. A German 4 masted barque called the Peking. This ship was moored in the River Medway and renamed Arethusa, over 7000 boys where trained on this ship.
In 1974 Shaftesbury Homes could no longer train boys on a ship due to new legislation, so the ship was sold.
Old Arethusa Boys formed an association the keep the memory alive, now after many years a memorial seemed appropriate.

Please take a look at the short video below which illustrates the installation process and the ceremony that took place.

As the cold weather keeps on coming, we are reminded that soon we may see a few of these beauties in our local parks and woodlands, maybe even our cemeteries. That's certainly one perk of the cold! ❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️

Stay warm everyone!
