Lindsey is one of our wonderful Complementary Therapists on our Inpatient Unit. She’s passionate about the difference that therapies can make, by supporting patients, their loved ones, carers and our staff alike.

Lindsey told us: “My hope is that Complementary Therapies in a hospice can help to improve people’s quality of life, and of death.

I want to remind people what it means to live. I aim to offer a space where people can pause, rest, and find a sense of peace, even in the darkest of times.”

Lindsey reminds us that hospice care is more than you think - it’s about caring for the emotional, spiritual and physical wellbeing of our patients and their loved ones 🧡

A couple who met while volunteering at one of our bereavement support groups have since married - and now dedicate their time to helping others through grief 🧡

Andy and Rachel Barker first met at the Burton Bereavement Help Point after losing their spouses, Belinda and Kev, who were both cared for by St Giles Hospice. What began as shared understanding grew into friendship and eventually love.

They married on the 30th June at Cragwood Country House, Lake Windermere, with over 50 guests, including family from both their previous marriages 💒 The day featured touching tributes to Belinda and Kev, a lake boat ride, and readings from fellow volunteers.

Instead of gifts, they asked guests to donate to St Giles Hospice and the Christie Foundation.

Their message: “It doesn’t show disrespect to the person you’ve lost when you love again - there’s room in your heart.”

Their story embodies Hospice Care Week - hospice care is not just end of life, but support for people and families at every stage 🧡

We support Hospice UK’s call to reform the way hospices are funded so we can secure the future of hospice care.

Hospices are on the brink. Surging costs have led to many services being cut back – just as demand is rising, fast, because of our ageing population.

The situation is not sustainable – and time is running out.

One of our incredible volunteers is Ann Bateman, who supports our Reception team at our Whittington hospice.

Ann welcomes visitors with a friendly face, answers calls, helps with administration tasks, and even takes care of feeding the fish! Ann is also Volunteer Ambassador – ensuring the hospice is represented in our wider community.

Ann's partner was cared for at St Giles Hospice, so for Ann, volunteering at St Giles is about giving back to a place that gave her and her family so much 🧡

Earlier this year, more than 50 bikers came together to help Hospice at Home patient Patrick Webber fulfil a lifelong dream.

Patrick’s one final wish was to ride a motorbike again - and thanks to the incredible kindness of the local biking community, Wheels for Wishes , that dream became a reality.

Moments like this remind us that hospice care is ‘more than you think’ - it’s about creating experiences and supporting patients, and their loved ones, to make every moment count.

Leon Ratcliffe, Director of Clinical Services, and Amy Bushell, Clinical Lead for Community, share how experiences like Patrick’s can make a lasting difference for local people, living with a terminal illness 🧡 Hospice UK

It’s your life, and that’s what matters

St Giles Hospice is a registered charity founded in 1983 by the Reverend Paul Brothwell, originally to improve the care of local people dying with cancer. We now support people in our community whose illnesses may not be curable such as cancer, motor neurone disease, heart failure, MS and respiratory disease. We also offer support for families and helpers.

Our dedicated team provides individually-tailored care either at the hospice or in patients’ own homes across our communities.

The range of specialist services is provided free of charge to those who need it. Although St Giles receives some funding from the Government, we rely heavily on donations and fundraising.
