We asked members of the ARTP committees what they are looking forward to at this year's 50th anniversary conference;

📣Max Thomas, ARTP workforce chair, was interviewed at a past ARTP conference and said; “The conference allows you to meet a lot of people [working] in a similar environment to you and people that are in the position you might want to be in in the future. You can find out how to bridge that gap, to get where you’d like to be by making those connections”. 🎥The full interview is on ARTP's YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqMTRMooaH4

❗Max is looking forward to the Exercise ECG workshops - which are being run in collaboration with - forging stronger links between our two workforces and sharing knowledge.
📅Thursday the 22nd May 2026, at 1pm and 2pm, ICC Belfast.

📣Deborah Babalola, ARTP Early Careers Representative, in the research committee said; “I am really looking forward to the new conference buddy scheme, attending a conference alone or for the first time can be daunting, especially early in your career. ARTP is always a friendly conference and I am so excited to learn more”

❗Deborah is looking forward to the Research Workshop.

Did you get last week's Spirometry Quiz question right? What is the main error demonstrated in this spirometry effort? The correct answer was D. Submaximal effort.

🔍The patient has not taken a maximal inspiration or blown hard enough (no sharp rise to peak flow) - the test is submaximal. This means the volume and shape of the flow volume loop have not been determined by the physiological properties of the lungs, rather by effort. These data cannot be used for interpretation. Early termination is also apparent, however this is related to the effort being submaximal and is not the main error.

🔍Suggested technique correction: Provide your patient with enough time to fully inspire and/or ask them to take a fuller/deeper breath in before blowing out as hard and fast as they can. It is important to work with the patient to support their understanding so they can improve and achieve clinically meaningful results.

Today NICE released new HealthTech guidance - Digital technologies for applying algorithms to spirometry to support asthma and COPD diagnosis in primary care and community diagnostic centres.
Read it at : https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/HTG776

This guideline provides evidence-based recommendations on the early use of digital technologies for applying algorithms to spirometry to support asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) diagnosis in primary care and community diagnostic centres, but also has relevance for other conditions and clinical settings.

The inaugural ARTP Spirometry conference also covers the use of spirometry for diagnosis of respiratory conditions in primary and community care, for more details and full agenda visit: https://www.artp.org.uk/events/47/inaugural_artp_spirometry_conference_2026
