Really valuable day attending a Paediatric Moving and Handling & Complex Risk Assessment course 👏📚
Great to collaborate and problem-solve with other physios—sharing ideas, experiences, and different approaches 🤝💬 It was a good reminder of the importance of thinking outside the box 🧠 when managing complex moving and handling situations and their associated risk assessments ⚖️
We also discussed the often grey area we encounter as physios—balancing rehabilitation with maintaining safety ⚠️➡️💪 So often, we are working to move clients forward physically from hospital discharge plans that can feel generic and don’t always include a clear pathway for progression 📈
As private physios, this is often where we get involved. Clients may have been deemed to have “no rehab potential” and are being fully hoisted, yet when you take the time to really understand their medical history, this doesn’t always add up 🔍
With the right approach—individualised rehab 🧩, ongoing assessment 📊, and gradual progression ⬆️—alongside reducing moving and handling equipment in line with physical improvements, we can achieve so much more ✨ This also involves retraining care teams 👥 and regularly updating moving and handling plans to reflect progress 🔄
Too often, generic bed and chair exercises alongside hoisting aren’t enough ❌ What’s needed is client-specific rehabilitation, clear progression, and alignment from everyone involved in their care to support increasing independence 🏃♂️
It was great to feel heard 🙌 and to openly discuss these complex cases with others who understand the challenges 💭
Feeling motivated to continue developing in this area and pursue further training 🎯 to help more clients maximise their function and rehabilitation journeys💪🚀
