Would you know what to do if your baby stopped breathing?

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust has partnered with the Pepper family to tell their story and have produced this video demonstrating how to perform infant CPR.

We hope no one ever needs to use these skills, but knowing how to perform CPR can save lives. Please share.

Arguments and conflicts in relationships happen to all of us. But conflicts are unresolved can have a significant impact on children and their wellbeing.

Some level of arguing and conflict between parents is often a normal part of everyday life. However, there is strong evidence to show how inter-parental conflict that is frequent, intense and poorly resolved can have a significant negative impact on children’s mental health and long-term life chances.

If you are in a relationship or family who are struggling to manage these arguments and conflict at home. There is free support available for you. If you are not in a violent, controlling or abusive relationship.

If you feel you need a bit more help than this, there are some free online support sessions for parents experiencing conflict. There are 4 online sessions that you can access on your own, with your partner or with support from family, friends or a professional:

To access these resources, all you need to do is register an account for yourself as a parent (free of charge):

👶Me, You and Baby Too - Helping expectant and new parents cope with changes in their relationship. Learn how to cope with becoming a new parent and stress

😤Arguing better - Raise awareness of the impact that parental conflict can have on children. By helping parents develop better ways of managing stress and arguments.

👧Getting it Right for Children - support separated or separating parents. Helping parents to avoid the harmful situations involving their children.

💵Debt and relationships - Debt and money troubles are one of the biggest causes of relationship stress, and the rising cost of living could mean this becomes a greater issue for many families. Helping parents to consider different ways they might find themselves in debt, the impact this can have on relationships and why it’s a good idea to talk to one another.

Our maternity services are continually seeking to improve our communication with staff and service users, including display boards, our leaflets, social media and our website.

As part of this work, we want to ensure that our material is representative of the diverse population who access our maternity services. In view of this, we are seeking photos from families who have accessed our service, including photos that show your journey through pregnancy, inpatient admissions, labour, birth and the postnatal period, including babies who may have received care through transitional care and neonatal unit.

We would really appreciate you submitting your photos for us to use in our communications, and welcome families from the Black, Asian and minority ethic (BAME).

If you are happy to share your images, please email them to Naomi.Plant@ulh.nhs.uk, who will send you the consent form which needs completing. Thank you in advance for your support.

Birth Afterthoughts

Did you give birth at Lincoln or Boston maternity, and would you like to talk to someone about your birth experience? To help fill in any gaps in your memory, or help to understand more about what happened and why?

Birth Afterthoughts will allow you to talk to a highly skilled midwife about your birth, and hopefully support you to move forward more positively. Where appropriate, the team can also refer you for more specialist support.

You can self-refer to the Birth Afterthoughts service by emailing the new email address; ULTH.PMA@nhs.net.

Please include the following details; Your name, date of birth, home address, email address, telephone number, and which hospital your baby was born in. Please also tell us whether you would prefer your appointment via telephone, online or face to face, and whether you have any accessibility requirements.

We aim to see women no sooner than eight weeks following their birth, in line with guidance, as it is evidenced that debrief before this time is not as effective and can do more harm for individuals. We aim to respond to referrals within two weeks, and if you have not heard from us within this time, please contact us again via email.

The service is not time-limited, however those who have birthed within 3-12 months of their referral will take priority to ensure they are given further support within an appropriate timeframe.

*Please note that the email address to contact has changed from the previously advertised one*

During pregnancy, your immune system (the body’s natural defence) is weakened to protect the pregnancy. This can mean you’re less able to fight off infections which makes you more prone to get serious illness.

Vaccines help our bodies fight off infections by getting our immune system to produce protective antibodies. This protection is then passed on to babies through the placenta or in breast milk.

This is important as babies don’t start to receive their first vaccinations until 8 weeks of age, so this can help protect them until they do, and their vaccinations start producing their own protective immune responses.

All of the vaccinations that are recommended during pregnancy have been shown through research to help keep you and baby safe. They are inactive, which means they do not contain any live viruses so cannot give you or your baby the virus it is protecting against.

More information about vaccines in pregnancy can be found at

💜Our March birth stats are here! See below for some more information and a bit of context for March’s data. 💜

Each month we will also share the top 5 reasons for induction and caesarean for that month as we often get a lot of questions about this.

For March:
Top 5 reasons for induction -
1. Diabetes (25%)
2. Reduced movements (19%)
3. High blood pressure & Larger Baby (10% each)
4. Growth concerns (9%)
5. Post dates (5%)

Top 5 reasons for Caesarean -
1. Maternal request (30%)
2. Previous caesarean (19%)
2. Delay in 1st stage of labour (13%)
4. CTG concerns (12%)
5. Chorioamnionitis (infection) (4%)

What is a VBAC?
It stands for ‘Vaginal birth after a caesarean’. It includes any type of vaginal birth following a caesarean in a previous birth.
We hope this will answer some of your questions.

Congratulations to all our families who welcomed new babies in March. Did you have a baby in March? 💜

🐼We are looking for women to be involved in a national research study, looking into low dose iron tablets and their effects.

🐼The study is interested in the use of iron tablets to treat anaemia. It will also explore whether taking iron tablets to prevent anaemia, rather than just treat, could be beneficial.

🐼Anaemia happens when red cells are reduced in a person’s blood. It can develop during pregnancy and is most commonly because of a lack of iron.

🐼At present, we do not have a good understanding of all health problems caused by anaemia in pregnancy, but some studies suggest that as well as tiredness, anaemia is linked to maternal bleeding and babies being born early.

🐼Anaemia can also be challenging for healthcare professionals to diagnose and treat.
There is also some evidence that giving iron tablets to women before they develop anaemia can help the health of mother and baby (i.e. prevention of anaemia rather than treatment once it has happened).

🐼If you would like to be involved you must be:
* Pregnant and over 18 years old
* Less than 15 weeks pregnant
* Not currently anaemic (low iron levels)

Get in touch with Amanda if you'd like to be involved:
a.mumby-croft@nhs.net or 07551 026609. Or let your midwife know.
