Sciatic pain can be a real (literal and metaphorical) pain in the bum!!! So, how can I help?
I regularly have clients who have sciatic pain or know someone who has. It is a common issue and, depending on what is causing it, can be managed relatively easily. As a massage therapist, I can help manage the muscular side. The piriformis (a small but mighty muscle, sitting beneath the glutes) resides very close to the sciatic nerve. When the muscle gets inflamed...PING...shooting pain down the back of your leg! And it hurts!! Along with massage, stretching and exercise can help keep those symptoms at bay. There are also lots of other muscles around the sciatic nerve that could cause this kind of pain as well - the piriformis isn't the only muscle in there!
If the sciatic pain is not cause by the muscles, there is a possibility that there is something else going on. A bulging disc or changes to your spine could also cause these symptoms which can be helped by seeing a chiropractor or osteopath. I do have recommendations for practitioners but if you know of someone that you trust, go with it!
If you have any additional symptoms such as loss of bowel or bladder function, numbness in your 'saddle' area (you can't feel it when you wipe after going to the toilet) and weakness in your legs, please contact your GP or go straight to A+E.
If you would like to book in for a massage and see if I can help with your pain/discomfort, please contact me on 07394 232338 or email sheenahayward@outlook.com.
