Regulation Isn’t a Luxury - It’s Foundational 🧠💛

Supporting your child’s sensory regulation isn’t just about “behaviour”, it’s about caring for their nervous system 🌿

When a child or adult is regulated, it helps them:
💖 Manage their emotions – Feel calmer and more in control
📚 Focus and learn – The brain can pay attention and process information
💪 Build resilience – Handle challenges without feeling overwhelmed
🛡️ Feel safe in their body – The nervous system knows they’re supported

From an OT perspective, regulation is foundational for thriving.. not optional!

Support Doesn’t Mean Fixing‼️

When your child is overwhelmed, our instinct is often to “fix it.”
But supporting their sensory needs is about guidance, not control 🧠💛

Here are some OT-approved strategies:
✅ Offer choices, not demands – Give your child some control
✋ Respect sensory boundaries – Don’t force touch, sound, or movement they can’t handle
❌ Avoid judgment – Avoid saying “You’re overreacting”
📅 Create predictable routines – Consistency helps your child feel safe
💬 Ask – “What helps when it feels like too much?”

Remember: Sensory support is about understanding and listening, not fixing 💛

Let us know below.. Which of these strategies could help your child feel more supported today? 👇

📕 Happy World Book Day! 📕

Here is a fabulous book all about our EIGHT sensory systems ✨

The story follows siblings Sophie and Tom as they learn to identify and use their internal senses
✨proprioception (body movement), ✨vestibular (balance/motion),
✨and interoception (internal feelings)
to support self-regulation and well-being.

There’s No One-Size-Fits-All Sensory Plan

Every child’s sensory needs are unique.. what helps one child feel calm may overwhelm another 🧠💛

Keep in mind:
🟢 What works for one child may not work for another
🔄 Needs can change depending on stress, age, or environment
📝 Trial, error, and self-awareness are key to finding what helps

Parent reminder 💛
Listening to your child’s (and your own!) sensory needs is a form of self-care, not a luxury 🌿

When Your Child Needs a Little Extra Input ⚡

Sometimes a child’s nervous system isn’t getting enough stimulation and they need some alerting strategies to focus and feel regulated 🧠💡

Here are some OT-approved alerting tools you can try:
🤸 Movement breaks – jumping, bouncing, climbing, or stretching
🍏 Chewing gum or crunchy snacks – oral input can help focus
✋ Fidget tools – stress balls, textured toys, or spinners
❄️ Cold water – splash on face or hands for a quick reset
🎵 Music with a steady beat – marching, clapping, or dancing along

These strategies help your child get the right level of sensory input so they can focus, engage, and regulate their body.

When the World Feels Too Loud… 🌪️

Sometimes your child’s nervous system just needs a little extra help to feel calm, safe, and focused 🧠💛

Here are some OT-approved calming tools you can try at home:

🛏️ Deep pressure – Using weighted blankets, tight hugs, or compression clothing
🧘‍♀️ Slow movement – Doing some gentle stretching, rocking, or yoga
🎧 Noise reduction – Using headphones, ear defenders, or a quiet corner
💡 Soft lighting or sunglasses – Reduce harsh or bright lights
🌿 Breathing & grounding exercises – Belly breathing, counting breaths, or mindful touch

These strategies aren’t “just tricks.”
They help regulate your child’s nervous system so they can feel safe, calm, and ready to engage.

Let us know...
Which of these helps your child (or even you!) calm down? 💛👇

Two Children Can Have Two Very Different Sensory Needs 👧👦

Every child experiences the world differently and their sensory needs can look very different.

They may..
Be sensory seekers 🤸‍♂️
Crave movement, pressure, or noise
Love jumping, crashing, spinning, or fidgeting
Often need extra sensory input to feel “regulated”
Sensory avoiders 🙉
Feel overwhelmed easily
Prefer quiet, calm, and low-stimulation environments
May cover ears, avoid crowds, or withdraw

Some children are a mix 🌀 and they might seek input in one sense (like touch) and avoid in another (like sound)

Why this matters for parents 💡
Understanding if your child is seeking, avoiding, or both helps you support them with the right sensory tools, instead of trying to “stop the behaviour.”

Let us know below if you notice your child seeking 🤸‍♂️, avoiding 🙉, or both 🌀...
