Fabulous training day with our clinical team yesterday (clinical lead Jenny took the pictures so not in them 😉). We focussed on ankle and foot assessment and treatment - it’s great to get together as a team and learn from each other while completing a whole day digital training course hosted by industry experts 🥰

WHY we're so passionate about NOT providing exercises classes that are 'one size fits all'

WE'RE THE EXPERTS AT THAT!

WHO:
Our team of physiotherapists and Sports Therapists specialise in in core based exercise classes over a range of 15 levels to be sure everyone is in the right level for them, not just a random group of people with different abilities working together.

WHEN:
We have 18 classes per week currently:
Monday evenings
Tuesday morning & evening
Wednesday morning & evening
Thursday 9am - 3pm
Friday 9am - 3pm

WHAT:
2 classes are chair based for those that can't get on the floor

2 classes focus on flexibility and freedom in our movements rather than strength

14 of those classes are core based, specialised classes that are helping 100s of people move better than ever before - whether they were already athletic and 'strong' or people who have been nursing a niggly back for years.

HOW:
Every new class member has a free pre-class session for us to be sure you're in the right class for you. All classes are very relaxed, fun and chatty with constant guidance and supervision to be sure you're working at your pace and really getting all the benefit these amazing classes offer.

NEW CLASSES:
We're planning to introduce a further 3 classes in September. Potentially Wednesday morning, Monday evening and another TBC depending on the preferred times of those that wish to join.

The Role
We're looking for a brilliant Operations Manager to jump in with both feet, roll up their sleeves, and get stuck in from the start.
You’ll spend 3 months digging into our operations with curiosity, compassion, and a good dose of humour. If it's a fit for us both, we’re open to this role evolving into a long-term leadership position – with shared autonomy and plenty of space for your ideas.

PLANKING CAN BE SO DANGEROUS!

This kind of reckless and dangerous article with apparent 'expert' advice and guidance really angers and saddens our clinical team!

Anyone in our classes or a patient who has worked on their core strength with us 1:1 in the clinic knows how we feel about fitness advice like this!!

IT SHOULD NEVER BE ASSUMED THAT ANYONE CAN PLANK AND ABSOLUTELY NO ONE SHOULD SUDDENLY START TRYING TO PLANK AS A WAY TO IMPROVE THEIR STRENGTH!!

Yes planking is an incredible exercise but on it's own it will NOT BUILD CORE STRENGTH.

You have to build your core strength enough FIRST to eventually build up to a plank.

Far too many personal trainers, fitness instructors and even some Physiotherapists and Sports Therapists start people off on a level of core strength training that in reality CAN TAKE YEARS TO ACHIEVE and most certainly should never be the starting point for core training.

Our lead Physiotherapist and clinic owner, Jenny, has over 25 years experience working closely with patients with poor core strength, many of who live active sporty lives and are often exercising in a way that is damaging their core strength not enhancing it.

DANGERS OF PLANKING INCORRECTLY (Which a huge percentage of people are doing without even knowing)
* Increased pressure on the pelvic floor causing weakness
* Increased risk of prolapse of bladder / bowel / uterus (especially in women after having children and more so after menopause)
* Splitting of the 6-pack muscles
* Increased pressure on the discs and joints of the lower back, contributing to back problems
* Worsening of symptoms of reflux, or increased risk of developing it
* Overloading the wrong muscles causing pain, restrictions and problems
* .....and so much more

We all too often treat men with a diastasis (splitting) of the re**us abdominus (6-pack muscles) through years of bad habits, poor strength training technique and excessive 'core' training when they don't even have basic core control. This split can lead to long standing issues with the lower back, hip, pelvis and even the knees, feet and shoulders. A split which is often experienced in the later stages of pregnancy that should never happen in those that have not grown a little human........and yet we see it daily!! This often starts in teenagers who's PE teachers, athletics coaches, football coaches, dance teachers etc think they know what good, safe and age appropriate core techniques are and instead are targeting the exercises they give their students/athletes at the level of an elite athlete - leading to issues at the time and a lifetime of poor body awareness when exercising with a huge risk of future back and joint problems. That can all be avoided.

We are so passionate about the benefits of exercise and all the ways in which we can help strengthen our bodies to live our lives to the full and be free from pain. BUT CLAIMING WE SHOULD ALL BE PLANKING FOR PROLONGED PERIODS OF TIME IS NOT JUST RECKLESS BUT INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS ADVICE!

This month's newsletter includes a useful blog on why stiffness, pain and mobility issues DO NOT HAVE TO BE TOLERATED just because you're over a certain age!

It breaks our hearts at the clinic when patients say "well.... at my age it's to be expected" as they've given in to the assumption you can't improve your body as you get older.

In the comments you'll see some pictures of some of our older class members/patients demonstrating just how they can move despite their age and underlying health issues.
